What is the maximum length and width of a standard T frame? How about the approximate weight?
I'm wondering if I can carry a bare frame on the roof rack of my Suburban. I've got three gutter mounted cross bars that are rated to 75 lbs each. I've carried more than 250 pounds on the rack before.
I transported a 23 frame for 200 miles on the roof rack of my 2006 Santa Fe, and never suffered a bit. And it is only rated for 35 lbs. I know the frame weighs more, but it was the only way I had at the time. Just make sure it is secured well, and you will have no issues
Eric, remember the Morris/Austin minis of the 60's, little front wheel drives which went like stink and handled like they were on rails? I drove a van version of one from Townsville in far north Queensland to Adelaide in South Australia, a distance of more than 3000 miles. On a gutter mount clamp on roof rack I carried a 1915 model T frame, two 9 foot lengths of 10" x !.5" Australian red cedar, and a long box with the rear radius rods, torque tube and tailshaft. If you have doubts about a Suburban carrying just a frame, it must be because it is a C@#$y. Get a Ford.
By the way, I towed a small box trailer carrying all the body panels for the 15 all the way.

Thanks Alan. I wasn't worried about the 'burb, I just don't want to bend my racks. It's a shame that Ford never really figured out the large SUV market, but nobody has offered what I get from my current Suburban, or from the first two that I owned. My first one, a 1960 straight six with floor shift three speed, was impounded for excessive parking tickets and the tickets were more than the truck was worth. My next one, a 1/2 ton 4WD V8 auto was a great truck, although my wife wanted more luxury. My latest, a 3/4 ton 4WD V8 auto is getting a little beat up. Now I'm looking for a '96 - '99 'burb with the same 6.5L turbo diesel that powers the military Hummers. A friend with one gets better than 20mpg... But I'm in no hurry, I can wait for the right one to come along.
Thanks for the info about the frame.
And the size of a standard frame is a little over 101" in length and 23" wide - with the late type running board supports still there about 62" wide, the early forged supports may be an inch less in total widt?
Weight? I can lift and carry a frame without much trouble, never weighed it. 100 lbs?
Forgot the rear frame crossmember - it's 42.5" wide on a 26/27, less on an earlier frame - about 28"?

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the links to the drawings. I'm always impressed with some of the info that people in this group can put their hands on in short order.
