I have a 1922 depot hack and the cable connection gets hot and smokes so I removed the cable and the 4 bolts. The starter comes out about an inch and a half and that's it. What am I doing wrong?

Remove bendix cover and bendix from starter or you could damage magneto field coil

you WILL damage the magneto and need an engine removal and dismantle to fix it if you try to remove the starter without first removing the bendix cover and bendix. The small bolts holding the bendix on that go through the spring are somewhat special, as are the screws holding the bendix cover on. Don't lose them. Don't hesitate to ask if you need more help.

I made the same mistake and got lucky. The mag still works well enough to run the car, so I guess I didn't do the serious damage I could have. Since then I've learned that the first Model T parts everybody should buy are these.

Starter removal is a good example of the fact that a T is simple but different from other cars, and it's best to read the manual before you start any job you haven't done before. The books can save you lots of grief, hassle, and expense.

I made that mistake the first time I worked on a T and ruined a freshly rewound mag coil. had to run a distributor afer that.

Funny thing there....we all seem to try and take our first one off without removing the Bendix, normal reasoning says just has to come out, and yup...it actually does!

My first came off that way, Bendix intact...took it to a guy to check it out and he didn't say boo about the bendix being in place, and getting it back in was a chore, and then finally with a good nudge for that last bit it slid in...lol...someone takes care of 'idyuts and the impaired' because the mag still worked, and that engine is now out 30 years later, being sent out, and I fully expect to get an e-mail with a comment, 'there's a ding in the coil ring winding...good thing you told us to send it out for rewind' :-)

Yeah...funny. I did the exact same thing but the embarrassing bit is that I installed the starter in the 1st place.

Some times I read the instructions and still do it wrong. I guess they call it a senior moment.

Should that be "chronologically' endowed? But I love "MCF" certainly.

"Choreographically Endowed" are those of us who have been around for many revolutions of the chronograph :-)
