I've had 2 starter drive bolts shear at the pin end. We got less than 60 starts with both. The last failure deformed the spring and the yoke fitting. Both were purchased from Macs. They don't seem to be hardened bolts. Should we machine them from grade 8 bolts? Does anyone have another source?

Forgot to mention the problem is in the Bendix assembly

Forgive me for asking. Are you using 6
volts?

Recheck your timing to be sure you are getting full retard.

6 Volts. I believe the timing is correct but how does that cause the bolt to fail?

Kickback of the engine causes the bolts to shear, the spring to deform, the shaft to bend, etc.

That bolt in electric starting takes the place of your arm in hand starting.
