Here is a quick sketch of how a lot of us connect the distributor.

If you make a lever about 2 1/2" long to go on the advance/retard rod and place it about level with the connector at the base of the distributor it will work as it should
.

Pull the spark lever down and the distributor will move clockwise advancing the spark.

advance

Here's what I did for my VW on my RHD T. I took some stock aluminum rod, threaded it and added a swivel joint at each end.

Here are a couple of photos of mine.
The distributor is a Bosch, I believe of the VW type and is connected by a straight rod to the advance/retard rod on the steering column.
It gives about 60 degrees overall so if you set it static timing retarded where it starts ok, it will allow plenty of adjustment for advance.
First photo shows retarded;

the second is at maximum advance;

and a detail shot of the lever attached to the distributor;

Peter, did you jump over the fence while I was out to do that sketch? If you had, you could have measured the rod as 11 1/2 inches long, not 2 1/2.
By the way, did the floor clean up ok?

Of course I stuffed up there slightly, mine and David's shown above are set up for a clockwise distributor, but if the lug is on the other side it will reverse the push-pull for an anti-clockwise rotation, as in Peter's sketch.

Chris the 2 1/2" was the lever length not the connecting rod. Longer or shorter may work out better depending on the length of the arm on the distributor. A swivel joint as David did which is threaded onto the rod will allow you to fine tune the mechanism.

Gerry, one other point check that the lever does not foul the bonnet (Hood) in the advanced position. As you can see the one in Chris's photo is too low. its nearly touching the chassis rail and I don't think it could be advanced as much with the guards and Bonnet attached.
