The wooden boxes are petrol cases. Each one designed to hold two 4 gallon tins of petrol. There is one tin, cut in half for use as a wash-basin on the box at the end of the stretcher.
Both the boxes (usually called 'cases') and the tins continued in use after bowsers were universal in transporting kerosene, so were later usually referred to as 'Kero cases' or 'Kero tins'
