The site was near impossible to get into today. The time has come for action. Get it right or get new web master. Enough!
You volunteering?
Would you be happy if we just cut his pay?
:rolleyes
I believe he is, Hal. That's very generous of him, don't you think?
Mercy, what a set you got there to go and say that!
The man is a volunteer. He cant help the dang server company is screwed up.
Perhaps when the man gets back from his vacation he can work on it.
Absolutely ZERO problems here.
Make sure it's the fault of the site before you rag on the highly paid webmaster.
Having said that this site DOES need a new host.
Ivan,,,, have you ever walked on very thin ice? Tread very carefully here, The differance between salt and fresh water is, Fresh water you eat the fish,,,Salt water the fish eat you. Go gentle on this ocean of salt water you walk accross,
Mister Anonymous Ivan, whoever you are and wherever you are, there's nothing wrong with the site. I've had no problem accessing it several times today. Maybe you need some kid to show you show to operate your equipment.
Ivan must be having a bad day.
Makes me think of Ivan the Terrible.
No problems here today. Holding back the nasties, turning over a new leaf
To paraphrase Steve: maybe it is some kid operating his equipment.
No problems here, and I think Chris is doing a heck of a job!! Chill Ivan!
JuSt had trouble getting in again?. What is the problem. Flame on until fixed. Only website I have trouble with.
Ivan, I'm on the other side of the world, other than the web site shut down a few days ago, every thing is fine.
It would be MORE helpful to know what operating system and browser you are using.
Do you know how to clear cookies? (If you don't KNOW all your passwords DON'T).......
Do you know how to run a command prompt to clear a bad url?
There's the command...be sure you leave a space between s and /
ipconfig /flushdns
crap.....I meant between the G and the /
Works for me all the time. Hmmmm----
Any one can complain... but few can fix. Chris has done wonders with a system that has major flaws.
Ivan, Do your home work. If you discover the solution then pass your wisdom on to Chris. Otherwise go to MTFCI and enjoy their problems!
I have had no difficulties, at all, with the MTFCA site since Chris has gotten it up again.
I am satisfied that Chris is on top of the issues, and for one am not even slightly interested in throwing Chris under the "proverbial" bus!
I wish I knew 1/3 of what Chris does about running a web site. Our own website for Sun Country Model T Club (SCMTC) needs a lot of help. Help that I would gladly volunteer, if I just knew how. I publish our newsletter "Leaks from Lizzie" and it just seems appropriate that I could/should take care of the website....Maybe next year. Thanks Chris for what you do!
I had issues also.
I cured them by going to the MTFCA site and looking at the 2011 year FORUM!!
While there I clicked onto the 2012 on the upper line and all is ok!
Just hope!
No problems here whatsoever today...
Maybe Ivan is really Garrett!
all good here from my phone, power out for the day while they upgrade something, l can get it.....
l'm about 40 miles west of Frank.
David.
Not sure, but something was up earlier today, either an auto upgrade in IE, or a brief moment of'suspended'.
My browser cache was cleared after last week, have logged on dozens of times since with cold boots in between and had been going right in and yet first try this afternoon got the dreaded start logic page, clicked refresh and went right in... don't know how that happened, but it did.......
First I want to say a really great big thank you to Chris our web master. I really enjoy the forum and I know he is volunteering his time and talents so I can use the forum to research items and keep up with how some of the Model T folks are doing.
Second, our office has several computers and we find that sometimes the system has issues and we are all down. In those cases we ask for help from the help desk. Yelling at the help desk has never made them feel like “fixing our problem first.” The other day – everyone was having problems logging onto the MTFCA web site and there was a note about that on the MTFCI site – so we knew it was not just our computer. (Thanks MTFCI – it is nice to be able to get the word out when either site is down.)
I just checked to the MTFCI site to see if others were saying they were having troubles getting back on the MTFCA site. Currently it looks like the MTFCA site is working well for most folks. I know it is for me and has since it came back up. So in my office when one person is talking loudly at their computer because it is not doing what they want but no one else is having issues – it usually is a sign the problem is with their computer or with them. So in the current thread, I don’t think the problem is web site as much as with something you are doing (or not doing) or your computer or both. You can verify that by going to your local library and signing on. Does it work fine there but not from your home computer? If you are computer challenged (I use them at work but I’m not a guru) ask one of the younger folks for help. Both my kids have graduated and moved on. Now I have to ask the neighbor’s kids for help. They take computer classes in elementary school now days. It works well – they are smarter about computers than I am and they help me with my computer and I know more about Model Ts than they do and I give them rides. Now there are some kids I would not want to check my computer – and if there were none available to help me – there is the local computer repair store (we used them when the lightening took out the power supply and fried the surge protector).
Note there was also a recent thread about being more civil in our postings. And I think folks have been working hard at that – thank you all! For some reason people feel free to type things we would probably never say face to face to someone. You have the same thing when folks are in a car. I use the illustration of the four cars at the red light. There is a normal modern car in front. Followed by Grandmother who’s gray hair is barely visible over the head rest of a larger older car. Behind her is the driver of a new red Porsche. And you are in your trusty car behind the Porsche. The light changes green and the first car begins rolling forward. Grandmother is not quite as fast and the first car is part way through the intersection. Grandmother is still not moving. What do you think the Porsche driver will do? Often times they use a combination of hand gestures and horn honking and if they can pull past Grandmother they do so. Now take the same people and put them in line at Walmart. The customer in front of Grandmother pays their bill and moves on. The gray haired Grandmother is again rather slow at noticing and has not moved forward yet. The Porsche driver is not in his car but instead is behind his shopping cart. To date, I have never seen the person in Walmart waving hand gestures at Grandmother for not pulling forward immediately after the other person moved. Now it may happen – or perhaps I’m the gray haired old man and people are yelling and my hearing is poor and I think they are saying nice things. But in general – it is easier to be more civil when we are face to face than when we are on the computer.
We should probably let the MTFCA leadership know that many of us think the forum and web site are really important to us. Fifteen years ago if the site was down – I didn’t notice. And of course there are many MTFCA members today that don’t know the web site was down because they do not use computers much. But now days I quickly notice when the site is down. It may be time to consider providing additional support and/or funding for the web site. Not that “throwing money at it” will make it better – but that there is a good chance that if Chris had some additional resources available he might want to make some changes. And perhaps there are some of you web site smart folks that could help Chris out with some of things he does on the web site. I don’t know if that it practical or not – but you could offer your talents to Chris and he could determine if they would be helpful in his situation or not. Clearly there will be a need for improvements over the next 5 years. And they will probably cost some time and money. I would be willing to contribute towards that effort. And whatever Chris would like me to do to be supportive of him and his efforts I will gladly try to do.
Respectfully submitted,
Hap l9l5 cut off
You catch on quick John.
I love this club and this forum. Chris you do a great job. I could not do what you do here. I'm here for the friends and Model T's forever.
Sure, we have had some hiccups lately. Since they are only hiccups, lets forget it, thank the webmaster for his work and move on.
Has Ivan ever contributed to this forum? He has posted over 200 times, but I am not familiar with his user name, and he has no photo or location in his profile. I think he has little credibility as far as complaining. This is one of the easiest forums to access, and the information available here is unbelievable. Thanks to the web master, and thanks to those who contribute, it could not be better unless each member was given a T when they join.
Best
Gus
Ivan, Computers are unforgivable! don't dot an i or cross a T and what your trying to do won't happen! My bet is the problems at your end with your computer or your providers gateway since the majority of us who tune in here multiple times a day are currently not having a problem.
I'll go on record and agree that our web hosting service, $uck$, but as for as I know, our webmaster is not the problem. The only way that Chris can, or will be part of the problem is if he doesn't get the board, or at least recommend to the board that we get another web hosting service. I was irritated at the inability to access the Forum when it was blocked by the web host, like many others were. I thought the problem was never going to be fixed. Once it was fixed, and I refreshed my computer browser, I've had no problems, but all I want for Christmas is a new web host for this Forum.
Ivan :
You do no say where you are but I am in California and a few days ago we had a problem but it started up and when I did a "REFRESH" it came back and not a problem since.
As said by others "Chris is doing great, but it would be nice if a different carrier could be found.
GOOD LUCK to all
I think Chris deserves a couple pats on the back and a big ATTA BOY!
Not any kind of bad-mouthing.
Great job Chris.
Looks like no takers for your rant Ivan. Try insulting some other sites web master, everything here is working just fine for all of us.
He means MTFCI
Kevlar does not crack drums.
All is fine here. Keep up the good work Chris. Many thanks for your time & effort.
I have had no problems since the recent "suspended" was unsuspended. We probably do need a new server, BUT I DO like this format MUCH better then FordBarn and others.
There are more ingrates in the world than we can ever hope to keep track of, so there's no reason to become dismayed when one of them decides to do us all the courtesy of identifying himself.
I'd also like to thank Ivan for giving me this opportunity to express my appreciation to Chris for picking up the torch and doing the absolutely fantastic job he's doing. Chris runs the best darn forum in the world. He volunteers to deal with countless headaches and does what is far, far too often, a thankless job.
Just this week, I was able to get a hold of a rare and hard-to-find part for my Model T because my call for help was instantly broadcast across this forum to hundreds of my Model T brethren. Chris, you got me out of a jam and you didn't even know about it. Now you know.
Chris, you da man. Thanks, Buddy.
I vote to suspend Ivan from this Forum.
I think Ivan was a little harsh, but except for the first two posts, we haven't heard back from him. Maybe he was/is unaware of all the much appreciated work that Chris does to keep this forum up and running.... Work that very few of us would or could do.... Also, having the forum go down is enough to bring out the beast in any of us..... I think we should give him a chance. Maybe he's a good guy, and now realizes that the problems are most likely on his end... Just my two cents worth..... Joe (AND THANKS TO YOU CHRIS!!!)
Ricks, How about Holder as well,Sorry, couldn't help myself
Mike, is Holder on this Forum? That slug should be fired for not prosecuting the high crimes and misdemeanors of the present and prior administrations.
Back off Rick! The problem with the forum is real. The webmaster writes the HTML and posts it on the server at the provider. The problem is the provider. The webmaster should be screaming at the provider for poor performance. I view many web sites every day and this is the only one that comes up "suspended" time after time. Refreshing your browser constantly is not a solution.
Just to throw in my two cents: I discovered the forum about 2 months ago and look at virtually every day. I've never seen it down, slow, or had any problems whatesoever. *shrug*
What does changing providers involve? I don't really know. I also don't know what changes to the Forum would take place with swapping providers but a lot of guys, myself included, are used to and like it as it is. Chris seems to know what he's doing so I assume it's not an easy task to switch + Forum changes may be a consideration too.
Ivan - I have very few problems with this site.
Except for when things are suspended by the web host.
Chris deserves thanks for volunteering his time so we have a place to play.
Charlie and Fred have it right.
Charlie and Fred have it right.
Ever notice how the guy with the biggest mouth doesn't have balls big enough to post his full name and where he's from?
I don't see him volunteering to take over as webmaster -- no pay, lots of time involved and a PMBC rant from some newby every time there is a problem.
One of my favorite sayings, "The loudest boos come from the cheapest seats."
Ask not, what your webmaster can do for you. Ask what you can do for your webmaster!
Stan you get the "biggest jerk" award. And you deserve it for the insults.
Woo hoo,
Ivn has been deleted, way to go Chris!
I at least have the honesty to post my name and address. You prefer to hide behind an anonymous post. You not only insult the webmaster of this site, a personal friend of mine, but don't have the guts to tell us who you are??????
Your children and grandchildren must be proud of their family heritage of standing up for what you believe in and standing proud behind your beliefs. Of course they learned to do it without stating their name or where they are from. Just like all those guys who signed the Declaration of Independence with only their first names or nicknames.
Think of me what you will, I sign my name and will stand behind everything I write, say or do. My word is my bond. I'm sorry you don't see it that way. I'm almost 70 years old. I was raised that way and have lived that way all my life to this point and will continue to live my life that way. If you don't see it that way that is your problem. People like you are why we have to require identification for a bidder number at our auctions and why I will no longer ship parts before I receive payment unless I know them personally.
The loudest boos come from the cheapest seats.
I say, a great big THANK YOU to the volunteers who have kept this site alive - been very helpful to me in the past.
Detractors - do better.
Chris, pay no attention to that man behind the curtain... Ivan, you act like you have a backstage pass as to what is going on between Chris and the provider. How do you know that Chris is not screaming at the provider to keep us up and running. H'e certainly doing a good job for me as I am having no problems with the forum. Could your problem be you? You assume too much of what you can't possibly know. Until you do know for certain as to what goes on between Chris and the provider, I'd appreciate it if you'd keep your thoughts (which is all they are. Not facts), to yourself. Neither Chris nor we need your sniveling and whining. Keep up the good work Chris. Jim Patrick
Guess he don't have to worry about this website being hard to access now, for him it is IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!
I find it kind of funny that in Ivan's last post, he had shifted his focus from the website performance to insulting Stan. I have to say that there are few people here that are rough enough around the edges to inspire some insults, but I've always considered Stan to embody most, if not all, of the the Boy Scout Law. And honestly, I think that we would all be better off if more people were able to follow those simple ideals.
Ya Ivan we have no problem with the website, learn how to use it!
Ya Stan; I'am a little older the you, and i agree with you 100% Al
I don't really care what any of you think but this forum runs better on 20-50 high detergent Castrol GTX
That's only true, Tman, if it also has a 180 thermostat and waterpump.
You know why Model T guys don't build computers?
They can't figure out how to make 'em leak oil..
Just proves a law I wrote back when I was in the working force supervising 50-100 people (mostly women) - "If you have a group of people and come in one day and give each one of them a 100 dollar bill, someone will gripe because they didn't get 2 50's!"
Goes to show that:
1. Some people are impossible to please.
2. Some people are only happy when: a. They are miserable, b. They can make others miserable, or c. both a & b.
Just a few comments for your friendly webmaster. Following are the comments I really liked, some made me laugh, and life is about having fun.
Would you be happy if we just cut his pay?
Make sure it's the fault of the site before you rag on the highly paid webmaster.
Kevlar does not crack drums.
I don't really care what any of you think but this forum runs better on 20-50 high detergent Castrol GTX.
I love this club and this forum. Chris you do a great job. I could not do what you do here. I'm here for the friends and Model T's forever.
Chris B: I volunteered because I love my job and what I do and thought the club could use my help. I believe we are all in this together, to support the Model T hobby and keep it going into the future.
What does changing providers involve? I assume it's not an easy task to switch + Forum changes may be a consideration too.
Chris B: I wish it was just a matter of copying our files to another location but that is not the case. The forum software we use is old and not supported anymore. The last place I had for information vanished at the beginning of this year. Moving the OLD forum software is not going to happen, it is going to be NEW FORUM SOFTWARE.
I'll go on record and agree that our web hosting service, $uck$, but as for as I know, our webmaster is not the problem. The only way that Chris can, or will be part of the problem is if he doesn't get the board, or at least recommend to the board that we get another web hosting service.
Chris B: I have the full support of the board with whatever it takes to move the site and upgrade the forum software. It was discussed at length at the last board meeting. I now have time to work on this since getting back from holidays.
I would like to thank all of you who have emailed me with ideas, suggestions, and other information about forum software and web host providers.
PS looks like Ivan deleted his own id. Some past logs shows he is from Palmer, TX
Thanks, Chris.
Norm
vBulletin is used by a LOT of forums.
I'm going to call the owner of www.smokstak.com (where I serve as a highly paid chief moderator) and ask him about the learning curve.
I have a fear that backing up all the archives could be problematic.......
OR is continuing with the current software and simply finding a new host in the cards?
waaaah!
Not to blow a bunch of smoke on Chris and swell his head but I think it would be a far below zero day in a place where many of our ancestors surely must dwell before we would find another webmaster who would check in on the forum from the base camp on Mount Everest (as he did) or from his high rise condo in Las Vegas (as he did) while he was, as the Canadians put it, "On Holiday."
IIRC, he also checked in while in London a year ago attending the wedding of William & Kate. I don't think many of us would be that dedicated to the job, especially for what it pays.
"I think that it is rare to see
a devoted web guy like Chris B.
Through Forum lows and Everest highs
we hope he doesn't say good bye.
So if you -itch and if you sob
be prepared to take his job.
'Cause if he one day says good bye
we could get Larry the Cable Guy".

Chris,
As my good friend Phil Mistretta used to tell me... "Non carborundum iligitimus" and he wasn't talking about grinding valves either!
Finally as Winston Churchill said (and I paraphrase) "Never have so few... done so much for so many"! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
Chris...
Every neighborhood has an "Ivan".
You are always welcome to critique MY websites!

Once a woman came up to W C Fields and told him "you're drunk!" W C Fields told her "Yes I am, and you are ugly. Tomorrow morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly!" He then drove home in his Model T. Which R U Mr. Ivan?
P S you may have to be over 60 to know who the great actor W C Fields was. Ha Ha.
Mark, while that sounds like something W.C. Fields would say, that well documented and accurate quote, has been attributed to Sir Winston Churchill who was responding to Bessie Braddock, at a diplomatic or political function. www.british-gazette.co.uk/2010/05/. Jim Patrick
It is morally wrong to let a sucker keep his money.
Barnum said it, but Fields played it in the movies.
Thanks Jim for the info. I thought I saw him say that in a movie many, many years ago. Not to May West though. May it was he said " Any man who hates kids and dogs cant be all bad, pass me another Gin. Model T's and Friends forever!
Bessie Braddock: “Winston, you are drunk, and what’s more you are disgustingly drunk.”
Churchill: “Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what’s more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly.”
I think Churchill was a man whom I'd have loved to have known.
"History shall be kind to me, for I intend to write it."
Steve Nice Churchill quote. One of my favorites
In the immortal words of henry Ford. "“Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain”.
Mark I do remember seeing WC Fields in a movie complimenting a tall, skinny, ugly woman in a way only he could: "Ah yes...all dressed up like a well kept grave". Jim Patrick
I have a WC Fields story that got me into trouble.
I was in a technical meeting and a few managers were giving me hard time.
My outspoken boss interrupted the meeting and told a story about Mr. Mayer of MGM and WC.
One day Mr. Mayer drove by WC’s house and saw WC lounging on his balcony.
Since he wanted to discuss something with WC he knocked on the door which was answered by a houseman.
Mr. Mayer announced himself and said that he wanted to speak with Mr. Fields.
The houseman had been instructed that WC was not to be disturbed by anyone so he said that Mr. Fields was not at home.
Mr. Mayer informed him that he could see WC and insisted that he tell WC that “Mr. Mayer” wanted to talk with him.
The houseman cautiously went to WC and explained that Mr. Mayer saw him and insisted that he they talk.
WC responded, “Give him an evasive answer. Tell him to go get screwed.” (the dirty word was a used in the story)
At that point my boss turned to me and said,
“Fred give these jerks and evasive answer!”
The meeting ended at that point!
