I had no idea that kangaroos were hunted for their hides.
That looks like a ton of work.

Michael, with the development of permanent watering facilities for cattle in the outback, there are many more kangaroos in places they never ranged before. Kangaroo shooters can still hunt but they have a strict Government controlled permit system to do so.

Nowdays, the carcases are dressed and chilled on site and are sent to processing works for both meat for human consumption and pet food. In the old days they were shot just for the skins. Kangaroo leather is some of the finest grained and strongest leather for its weight in the world.

I have seen kangaroo meat on the menu in Oakland.
Never tried it though.

Perhaps the photographer only snapped part of the car because some of the 'roos were still 'opping?
