We have a member here seeking wheel size help for his original 1904 Pope. After the war we are fairly sure the wheels were changed to 23" rims which has overgeared the car and rendered it virtually gutless and unusable. Last time out we towed it back to the rally hub point. Does anybody know anybody with a veteran Pope that we can correspond with?

Just a thought. If you can't get some wheels closer to original and if the car happens to be chain drive, you might fool around with some different sprockets fix the gearing in that manner.

Ross McTavish,brother of engine re-builder Sandy McTavish has a 1903-4 Pope.They reside here in Ontario,Canada not too far from us.The McTavish brothers are very well known and well versed in early cars.I'm sure they can shed light on any questions you may have.
I have an early 1905 car myself. It has 28 x 3 rims/tires on it. Many early cars used this size of wheel.It was as common new, as 30 x 3.5's are for the T's.

Just as an additional comment. My car used to be totally gutless too.I changed the valve timing using a re-print of a 1905 Cadillac manual as a guide only and this made a huge improvement in the way me 1905 Queen ran.After many many hours of examining and head scratching,I also discovered that the cam shaft in my car had been installed backwards in the early 1940's! It has an assembled camshaft. This problem has turned up a few time with different makes of early cars.Might be worth looking in to.Our car runs like a cut cat now:-)

Is your Pope a 1 or 2 cylinder? Our little Queen is a 2 cylinder 12 HP.

Be careful when you simply call a car a "Pope."

I believe the car shown is a Pope-Tribune.

Not to be confused with:

Pope-Hartford
Pope-Toledo
Pope-Waverley (which is an electric)
etc.

Dear All, I appreciate this thread is off topic, but I cannot think of a better place to ask for help for such an old car.

Thank you for all of your leads. It is a 1904 Pope Tribune, 7Hp from memory. The car has been in Adelaide since new. I will gladly pass the leads across to the frustrated owner. He also owns a Metz; perhaps one day he will see the light and get a tow car instead of being the "towee"!

The HCCA is the club for those early "horseless carriages". However, their forum has so little activity it is nearly useless. The AACA has a sub-forum for the horseless carriages though, and it is quite active. I'm sure he could get some answers there. He would need to set up a username / password, but it would be well worth it. Here is a link.
