Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: What the #@$$! is happening here??

Harold, thanks for the fuel tips. I did indeed put fresh premium, non-ethonal gas in. But when I took the plugs out, I discovered this.

All four of the plugs look just like this one. Is this right? I've never had the plugs out on my T. Compared to all my other rigs, this looks way wrong. I've done hundreds of plus on moderns and have never seen this.

What's happening here??

This is a Champion X plug, btw, if that makes any difference.

Looks like a normal Champion X to me.

Looks purty gappy from here.

The Ford book calls for 1/32. I'll check them all. My surprise is that the side electrode is bent way over like that and not directly over the center electrode.

I guess that's normal for these plugs?

They do look a little "gappy". Going out to confirm the gaps.

The side electrode should be 1/32" from the side of the center electrode, typically about 1/8" above the bottom of the center electrode. I bet it runs better after you get the plugs gapped properly. Champion recommends a .025" gap.

Thanks for the pics, Royce! The center electrodes in your pics protrude further than those on mine. Hopefully that won't be an issue.

Thanks again for the pics. I looked all over the web for a pic of this plug and came up empty.

Oh one more thing, about the gap. Even though the Ford service manual recommends 1/32 (.031) gap, should I still go with the Champion rec. of .025"?

The side electrode is bent that way so that excess oil will drip off and not foul the plug, works well if you have an oil burner like my 24 was before rebuild. KB

I cleaned them gapped them all to .025, cleaned up the contacts in and on the distributor. Adjusted the carb and - whammo! Runs better now than at any other time since I've owned her.

Thanks for all the input guys.

I'm feeling pretty confidant now, about doing the father's day rides tomorrow for my guests.

Fascinating, Keith. Looking at the design, I can see where that would be the case. Interesting. My little 79 Cobra could have benefitted from such design...grin..

Here are couple of pictures for you.

This is from the early twenties, slightly later than the one in Royce's 1921 ad above. Note that the center post is removable, held in by a nut, but the porcelain has ridges like the later plug. The post thread is 6-40.

Here's an exploded view of the same plug.

This is the type more commonly seen today, from the late twenties and the thirties. The post is held permanently in the insulator by a crimped brass cap. The post thread is 8-32.

Anyone got a photo of what a typical motorcraft f11 should look like?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Craig Anderson, central Wisconsin on Saturday, June 16, 2012 - 11:29 pm:

I just replaced a set of Motorcrafts in my '27 Tudor a few hours ago.
I have no idea how long they were in there but there's a set of NOS Champion X's in it now, gapped at about .030, and it made all the difference in the world.

Thanks for the great pics, Steve. That really helps.

Yep, Charlie, based on Royce and Steve's pics, it's apparent, isn't it? Wowzers.

I guess I need to go shopping..

You can buy them new, but the best price I've found is about $20 each at O'Reilly. The most I've paid for good used ones at swap meets or auctions is $7, but usually less than that.

Daniel, you need to stay away from premium fuel also. It's harder to burn (ignite) and absolutely not needed for a normal T.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Royce in Dallas TX on Sunday, June 17, 2012 - 09:40 am:

Your plugs don't need to be replaced. Take the plug apart and rebend the side electrode until it is in the right position. Don't ever bend the center electrode, you will break the porcelain.

Those plugs should last a long time.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By John Leming on Sunday, June 17, 2012 - 09:05 pm:

ok, so the Champions are different because they are a side electrode, but the motorcrafts I have are end electrodes, but the outer electrode does not extend fully across the bottom of the inner electrode. I did set the gap at .030 and it made a huge difference in my car. Is the general concensus such that the Champions with the side electrode are better??

Danial, just clean the champion Xs and keep using them. What you did is exactly right. Cleaned and gapped and good as new. I like the old ones better than the new ones anyway. At the very least, if you just gotta put in new ones, do save these as they are still good.

Also, forgot to say, happy fathers day and have a great T drive. I put over 100 miles on mine yesterday with my wife and daughter. It was great. Hope to get out to see you and that T one of these days.

If you decide you want to get rid of those plugs, just send them to me.

hahaha, thanks Erich....

No premium fuel, eh? Interesting. Ok. Makes sense. And it looks like I have a small evening project the next time it rains - taking them apart and giving them a thorough cleaning..

It was a great day yesterday. Father's Day and my birthday only fall together once every several years. We did get a short ride in, Erich in the morning, but the rest of the day until almost dark, was spent on a slow moving river in kayaks.

I envy you and your long ride though. I'm shooting for next weekend if the weather cooperates.

What car show and where is it? My bride and I may be in Eugene this weekend. Would be cool to meet up and see the Flivver as well as y'all.

Hey Erich! The show is in Crow. Very small town about 3-4 miles south of the town I live in (Veneta) on Territorial highway. They hold this car show every year to help the one small scholl in their district there.

Here's two links: the first is a link to all Oregon car shows for the month of June. The Crow show is about 2/3 the way down the page.

The second is to the link for that specific show.

Would love to see you there!

And don't spend the extra money to buy gas with that stuff added to it to make it burn slower.
Your T can't have such high compression that it needs premium.

Wow, looks like an easy drive from your house. Will give you a call if it looks like I can come get that beer....I mean come out and see you and your T. May even bring the wife and folks.

It's only a few miles but the mountain between me and Crow is way too much for the T with my driving skills and the coaster brakes the thing has.

I would love to buy everyone a tall cold adult beverage after the show at the Countryside Inn in Veneta..my brother and his girlfriend may still be in town and my daughter and son-in-law may have to join us if you don't mind the crowd. They're all good sorts.

-------
@Aaron - yeah I've been getting that picture here about the gas. I had no idea. I've always just put premium in my old cars and extended that philosophy to my one REALLY OLD car without thinking.

He's meeting me here at 7:15 and we'll be there by 7:45 a.m. for the feed.

We will be heading back from Lincoln city via another stop so have no idea how it will all work out. I seriously think you are going to have to eat my pancakes for me. The main purpose of the visit is to see my folks and I have no idea what they will want to do. He loves photography so the cars may appeal to him for that. You can bet I'll bring my camera. I just hope to get there before it is over. Whatever happens, I hope it will be a great day for all involved.

Heading out the door for the beach now.
