I once lived near to Lake Perkolilli, in Kalgoorlie, and have done some time trials on the lake. I wont tell you what in though. Its not a dry salt lake but rather a dead flat dry dirt bed and everything gets covered in the stuff.
Great pic and thanks for posting it Dane.

Here is a report from the Western Argus (Kalgoorlie)on the 6th September 1927.

Alas it seems that the Ford in the photo only managed 3rd in the race.

I have copied the main story, below.(Excuse the hyphens- they are where the lines of newspaper print end.)

The full story and results can be found here

As well as the main races, there was a taxi cab race and some one-make races. Among these was a Ford only race, which must have been for standard cars. It was over six miles and a time of 8 minutes, 38 4/5 seconds was recorded. Not sure of my mathematics, but that seems to work out at about 41.63 m.p.h.

PERKOLILLI MOTOR SPORTS

CHRYSLER WINS CHAMPION- SHIP. L. ROBERTS' MOTOR CYCLE CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday the sun was shining brightly from a cloudless sky and no one could have wished for a better day for the drive to Lake Perkolilli, where the annual State championship motor sports were held. The bush has been consider- ably freshened up by the recent rains and is nice and green. The wild flowers are also in full bloom. In places, especially between Ka- nowna and the lake the ground is carpeted with masses of white ever- lastings. What caught the eye of many visitors most of all were the sheets of water, nestling between the hills; the salt lakes several miles on the other side of Kanowna. From !early morning till mid-day there was a constant stream of motor vehicles to the lake. There must have been four hundred or more motor cars, besides trucks and motor cycles. There were also a large number who "pushed" bicycles out. The attendance was approximately 3000 . and the gate takings a little over £250. When the cars were drawn up alongside the racing track they occupied nearly the whole length of the lake. There was only a slight breeze, and the spectators were not covered with dust as on previous meetings. This is the first time that the champion- ships have been held on a fine day. The day's pleasure was not marred by any serious ac- cident. There were several minor breakdowns to cars on the way home. After the last event the traffic to Kalgoarlie was very heavy. Many picnic parties stay- ed at the lake till a late hour. The sporting programme was in capable hands, and every event started on time. There was no waiting. Great interest was taken in the motor cycle championships, the entrants for which were all local riders. At the start Christian- sen (A.J.S.) went to the front from Roberts (B.S.A.), but on the sec- ond lap Roberts passed him. Chris- tiansen came again and passed Ro- berts. It looked as if he had the race well in hand when his ma- chine developed engine trouble. Roberts then passed him and won very easily from Christiansen and Gazzard. There were only four starters in the State Motor Car Championship. The Paige broke down on the way to the lake and was unable to take part in the race. The Bugatti, a new ma- chine driven by C. Poole, had not gone more than half a mile when it developed engine trouble (spark plug). This left three cars in the race. The Chrysler 6 (A. Colliver) went to the front, followed by the Buick (J. C. Smith), and the Ford (O. E. Cranston). They kept this order throughout the race, the only change being that the spaces between the cars continually grew bigger. Colliver put up a fine performance. He lapped the Ford on his eighth circuit. His average speed for the 20 miles was approx- mately 80 miles per hour, and he won by half a mile. S. J. Colliver,

driving a Chrysler car, had bad luck in the Chrysler Cup. He had a tremendous lead on the second car in the last lap when his en- gine stopped. However he came on to fill second place behind the Nash (Hall). J. Hehir was the most successful bicycle rider. He won the two events put down for deci- sion.
