How the devil do you support the drive shaft and peen the pin through the little hole, with out boogering the threads of the drive shaft tube? I'm wondering how I can get a good job peening both ends of the pin, not over doing the first side peened. Has anybody ever tapped the hole and used a set screw and Loctite?

Great question Doug! There must be a better way to update this very agricultural design. That pin has always worried me too!

I screw in a brake support bolt until it contacts the pin. Then rest the brake support bolt head on a large piece of railroad track scrap sitting on the floor. Then peen the opposite side with a 2 pound hammer and a 5/16" pin punch.

Then flip the rear end over, swap sides and repeat so both sides are peened tight.

I pre-peen one end of the pin, insert into place then thread in a fan arm pivot bolt that I counter bored slightly with a drill bit to accept the already peened pin securely then proceed to peen the opposite end.

I just used a large flat end punch in the bottom hole and laid it on the floor then took another punch and peened the top end. Then turn the driveshaft 1/2 turn and repeat. It is easier if two people are used, one to steady the lower punch and the housing and the other to do the hammering.
