On a recent road trip to Tuktoyaktuk in Northern Canada in my '47 Dodge we stopped for gas along the Dempster Highway in Eagle Plains, Yukon (population 8 and the only civilization/hotel/fuel/restaurant for 250 miles in either direction).
This rear wheel remnant was hanging on the wall in the gas station and I asked the manager what was the story behind it.
Turns out there was a family from somewhere in SE Asia who had rented a pickup and were driving north to the arctic for a vacation. They had been warned about wolves and other dangerous wild animals along the route and took those warnings to heart.
The Dempster is shale gravel and can be hard on tires in the summer. The tourists got a flat south of Eagle Plains and, not wanting to risk an animal attack while changing out the flat, stayed safely in their truck and drove the 90 miles to Eagle Plains to get it taken care of.
