When I was in Holland six years ago, I visited Kees Steeman in Limmen. This time, it was Toon and Ditty Boer in Klaaswaal. I had e-mailed Toon to say that we were in Holland and wanted to drop by. Yesterday, we drove from Heiloo to Klaaswaal and spent about five hours with them. After our arrival, we had coffee and then Toon took us on a tour of the area (which is where he was born and grew up). The tour included a large barn where he stores a number of his toys, and the farm where he grew up and where his daughter and son-in-law breed and raise horses. Then back to Toon and Ditty's place for lunch and more good conversation. Finally, at 3:30, we headed back for Anja's sister and brother-in-law's house for dinner.

The Model T world really is a fraternity, and one I am very glad I belong to. This was a really great visit.

I took a number of pictures, but I find that working on this laptop is awkward, so I will only post the one I took when we left. More once I get home next week.

Dick, can you tell us who are in the pictures. I assume the tall young fellow standing is Toon, no?
Is that your rental car? Tell us about it. I'm sure it has a very small engine but I doubt if you had any trouble getting up any of the hills in Holland!
I am sure we are all waiting for you to post more pictures of your visit in Holland.

Aaron, yes, the tall fellow is Toon (pronounced TONE). His wife Ditty is next to the car and Anja is already in the passenger seat. (She had gotten into the car before she realized I wanted to take a picture, so I took it like this.) The car is our rental. It is a Renault Twingo, the smallest car the rental company had. It had a manual transmission, but since it was equipped for rental to Americans et al., it had power steering, power brakes, and A/C. A TomTom GPS for the Benelux (Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg) was included in the rental. If I had wanted more countries, there would have been a small additional charge. I chose this car because it was the cheapest, but it actually was quite enjoyable to drive. (Getting used to traffic in Holland again took a few days, but it all came back to me eventually.) I'll post more pictures by the weekend, but am playing catch-up right now (including dealing with the fact that a woman ran a red light and totaled our Ford Explorer while our son was driving it. She acknowledged that it was her fault and was ticketed, but dealing with it from thousands of miles away could have been a big hassle. Thank goodness our daughter stepped in and did yeoman's work doing what needed to be done.)

We really enjoyed our time with Toon and Ditty. The fact that Anja and I speak Dutch was nice, but we could have had the same visit in English and enjoyed it just as much. Tip: any time you're near Klaaswaal, contact Toon.

Dick,

Looks like you guys are having a great time. Holland is a beautiful place. Only been there once but did the usual touristy stuff like watched them make wooden shoes and visited an active windmill. Oh of course had to walk thru the Amsterdam redlight district. :-)
Dont know the language so driving for us would have been interesting to say the least.

Vince

Vince, we're home again. The first time I visited the red light district in Amsterdam, my guide was a Roman Catholic priest friend who was an Air Force Chaplain. We had met at Little Rock AFB and he was stationed at Camp New Amsterdam when I was in Paris, so I went to visit him. As we were walking through the red light district, he said that he often showed it to friends visiting the country, but always wondered, if he was hit by a car there, what he would tell his bishop.... :-)

We visited Ditty and Toon on thursday (14th) to give back some lent coils and a tool. A short visit but a pleasure and good cake and coffee. I like the visits there and it is not so far away from us(2 hours).

Here some pictures from thursday on our way to the north sea in Holland:

and the next day we visited "Den Hartogh Ford Museum" in Hilegom

Kind regards

Michael

As promised, here are some more pictures from the visit to Toon. It is interesting that Model T people the world over tend to have the same interests.

This is Toon's 1912 Touring.

The car on the left is one that Toon is working on for someone else. The one on the right is one he built himself from parts (including a non-T windshield).

A hit and miss engine.

One of Toon's tractors.

Likewise.

I suppose the red tractor is a 10-20 (10HP on the drawbar, 20 pulley) and the other may be an F12? I've not seen such tractors in 50 years.
Thanks for the explanation of the rental car and the additional pictures.
I drove from Belgium up through Holland and crossed the Zider Zee in the spring of '59.
I found it quite easy to drive in Holland. If you just looked lost you could count on a moped rider to offer directions in good English. We had it happen twice.
Since the country is so flat mopeds were very popular in the 50's.

Michael, thanks for the interesting pictures. That is the kind of a post we all like to see and can count on on this forum.
The black AA is sharp.

Aaron, Toon will have to tell you about the tractors. He left last Tuesday for France and the big Model T gathering that Olivier has mentioned here often (and which I'd love to participate in some day). I don't know if he logs onto the forum when he is traveling or not, but I'm sure he will answer when he is back home.

Mopeds are still popular, but our car rental included a Tomtom GPS, so getting lost was unlikely. In fact, the Tomtom took us flawlessly from my sister-in-law's house in Heiloo to Toon's house in Klaaswaal. Pretty amazing when you think about it....

Ron, yes. Toon mentioned that you would be there. You will really enjoy their company. They're T people. I needn't say more.

Very nice pictures and good looking cars. I have only been in Europe once, but during that trip we visited Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria,Lichtenstein, and United Kingdom. Drove in most of those places except the U.K. The signs are standardized and Stop sign exactly as it is in USA. The speedometers are calibrated in Kilometers and the speed signs are the same in all the countries. I had no problems understanding the signs. I might not have pronounced the names correctly, but I could understand them. I am glad you had the good visit.

Ron,

make sure you visit the Den Hartogh museum, if you already havn't, while in the Netherlands. It's the Model T pilgrimage destination of Europe I reckon. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the enjoyable thread, Dick. Makes me want to take off travelling around the world again.

Regards,
Bede

Dick,

I just arrived here in Vichy, France for the annual Model T event. I flew from California (80 F) to Spain (85 f) a couple of weeks ago, then drove a rental thru Spain & France to Caen (60 f). Took the ferry to the UK (55 f) where I met up with some British Model T guys and we all went to Ireland (50 f). Had to finally take off my Hawaiian shirt and buy a winter jacket. The Irish Model T Club hosted a great 5 day tour.

Took the ferry back to UK and another ferry to France. Two day drive to Vichy, although met some Dutch this morning who made it hard driving in 11 hours. I expect to see Toon & Ditty this afternoon at the reception in the park.

From here I am going to Germany for a few days and then to Segovia, Spain to attend the 1st annual Spanish Model T event hosted by the new Spanish Ford T club. Everyone is invited.
Bailey

Bailey, Toon mentioned that you would be at the French event. I told him about the time 11 years ago when we both showed up at Mr. Martini's place at the same time and got a tour of his garage.

Ron, I guess that if you had plans to come through Denmark you would have contacted me in advance.

Would have loved to do the big sightseeing tour with you and your grandson in my Model T :-)

Inquiring minds want to know.... :-)
