Can anyone give me a clue about the positioning the timer cover? The timer adjustment rod has been bent up and I had to straighten it. Now, I have no idea where the cover should be positioned for timing purposes. Thx in advance !

It depends on what type of timer you have. Different reproductions varies, so you better set it by first setting the piston position by looking at the crank pulley pin, then switch the ignition to bat and turn the timer until the right coil start buzzing - then adjust the rod to fit to that position.

Note: The right front coil on a 27 makes the spark for spark plug #1. It will only buzz when #1 piston is at top dead center on the compression stroke. The pin is horizontal when any piston is at top dead center. Just listen for a buzz. The buzz should happen after the pin starts to rotate a few degrees past horizontal. That would be the driver side lower than the passenger side on an American car. or the right side lower as you face the car from the front. First thing to do is find top dead center for piston #1 on compression stroke. Turn the timer counter clockwise until you reach the point where the coil for #1 just stops buzzing. After you get the rod adjusted turn on the key with the spark lever all the way up turn the crank VERY slowly until you hear any coil just start to buzz. The pin should be just past horizontal for the buzz of each coil.

Don, if I understand your question correctly, you are asking about the actual timer (itself) position and fitting the spark advance rod to it - as opposed to the engine timing cover that you mentioned ... yes/no ...??

The timer position has to be carefully set to prevent a backfire or kickback when cranking the engine by hand or by starter. There have been many postings in the past on the proper method of setting the rod for the correct timer position. Use the "keyword search" feature above to find the old postings. This is one adjustment that you want to be correct, and not just 'good enough'.

Regards,
Garnet

Garnet, yes I was asking about the actual timer and rod. I haven't been able to use the search engine since the site work. The rod was bent up pretty good when I got the car and the engine is fresh now so I need to reset the timer and rod. Might have to wait for help on this one...Thx
