Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Generator question

What is the effect of wiring up the field coils the wrong way round on a generator and would it cause any damage? I have a generator with field coils disconnected but the natural way they lay indicates they are not crossed as suggested in MTFCA electrical book. The field coils look as if they have been replaced at sometime. Before I put it in my T would appreciate any feed back as to possible damage if the field coils are wired wrong or better still a way to check they are right before installing in the T.

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this.

I just went through that scenario with a set of repro coils. When installed as per Ford manual (crossed leads) the generator motored C.C.W. - not correct. Apparently, some number of new coils were incorrectly wired or wound incorrectly (helpful information from Ron P.) so it came apart and uncrossed the leads - works fine now and turns C.W. looking at the front.

You will have to request from Ron P. any info regarding damage but I believe the generator just won't charge.

If you have a power source (6v or less) and a compass, you check the field coils on the bench.

1. Lay the coils out with the leads extended.
2. Attach 6v+ to the right lead.
3. Attach the negative to the left lead.
4. Move the compass near each coil from right to left. (From + to -)
5. The compass should read N-S-N-S as you move near each coil in succession.

If the sequence is anything but N-S-N-S the field coils are out of phase.

There are a lot of those improperly formed Model T generator field winding assemblies floating around the reproduction chain. I ran into a recently made one a few weeks ago.
You can do the motor rotation test Steve mentioned above to determine the correct way to connect the pigtails or you can find a diagram for the procedure Ken describes in the March 1, 1920 Ford Service Bulletin Page 179 Figure 259.

Say Ron, are all the Ford Service Bulletins available somewhere out there? The link you gave gives a hand full of pages, is there a way to get to the complete index. I have the paper copies, but these would be available anywhere.

Mike
The MTFCI Technical Library has the Ford Service Bulletins on-line. You need to log in with your name and member number to obtain access.
Unfortunately the chronological list by bulletin date links do not work.
The listing by technical category links work well.
Hence you search category "generator" and find Vol 1 issue 20 page 179 you find the figure I mentioned.
There is a wealth of good information in those Ford Service bulletins.
Have fun

I just spoke to Steve Baumgarner and he will try to get the webmaster to correct the links in the FSB Chronological listing on the MTFCI Technical Library.
