Back in 2004, Kent Gilbane hauled our T to the Show-Me Tour in Neosho, MO. We enjoyed the tour so much that I commented to Anja that we should get our own trailer and that we would need a tow vehicle for it. Her response was, "Why don't we trade my car in for an SUV?" Yesssss.... In any case, we bought the Explorer and have used it to tow the T all over the country. As Anja has become less mobile in the last six months or so (and doesn't drive any more), we decided to sell the Explorer to our son. I'm afraid I don't see us attending any more tours in other cities. Our son was driving the car while we were in Holland and a woman ran a red light and totaled the car. The car is still ours, so we will settle with the insurance.

The end of an era for us....

OUCH, wow for such a big hit in the front side, the body panels seemed to have stood up well, looks like she/he just got the front, right in the wheel well.

For me, that's a repairable fix but it doesn't take much to total a car these days. I used to buy an occasional total and rebuild it. The worst ever was a 90 Mustang. The driver lost control on an Interstate and bounced it between guard rails on all four corners. Hardest hit was on the left quarter just behind the door. The sill and floor panel was displaced inward about six inches. I had it back on the road in about six weeks and sold it a week later. That was back when the 5.0 Mustang was hot but you'd never get an insurance company to fix it.

Nice repair Ken.

Can't do that in Ca. these days. Unless you keep the car and don't insure it. Or sell it to someone who will drive it without collision insurance.
If the insurance company totals it you will be given a new title called a salvage title.
That's ok except no one can ever get collision insurance on it again.
I have had a couple with a salvage title that I drove until I got tired of it or some other large problem arose.

Dick Lodge,

I hope your son is OK. Did the airbag deploy?
Sorry to hear Anja's becoming less mobile.
Wishing you and yours the best.

Dick, aren't you making a big deal out of nothing at all. I mean from the looks of it a little buffing and she should be as good as new. (Just kidding)

It looks easily repairable to me. Your insurance can call it total if the loss exceeds book value. You can settle for what ever number they give with the stipulation that the vehicle not be totalled usually.

If it was my car I would try to negotiate as much cash as possible and keep the car. But if you are not capable of swapping the fender and the suspension parts then the cost of the work will be more than vehicle value.

I bet it would have to go on a frame alignment machine to get the suspension straight again. You can get a better price than an insurance job if you offer cash. Is your son handy with tools?
PickUrPart yards sell parts really cheap.

I hope you and Anja can enjoy life with its limitations. We are all given a limited number of summers.

Looks like the windshield post moved. Definitely a job for a pro with an frame machine. Invest the insurance money in something nice and comfy for your wife. Maybe she will be able to get out more! Good luck and god bless! :-)

Neither my son nor I is sufficiently handy to be able to do anything with the Explorer ourselves. The other issue is that we (unfortunately) are no longer going to need a tow vehicle and he doesn't really need an SUV. He was going to buy it for the same reason Sir Edmund Hillary said he climbed Everest. Now he'll probably get something more practical. The offer from the insurance company was higher than I expected it to be, so I am not complaining.

I'm glad she hit it as far forward of the driver's seat as she did. The airbag did not deploy. Douglas had a concussion and some pain afterwards, but apparently nothing permanent. I believe the other party's insurance is going to reimburse him for that. My (very competent) daughter has been handling everything, so I don't know all the details.

Dick, that is fixable.Dont let the insurance cheat you. That will be on the road 6 months or less from the time you settle.
Sorry to hear travel has become difficult.

I fell asleep at the wheel of a 2003 Jeep Liberty. Did 2 dollars shy of 12K damage, and the insurance STILL didn't total the car. It took two months, but it was fixed and drove better than when I got it with 4K on the odometer.
