I have a few old Wards Riverside tubes with the small diameter 5/16" metal valve stems that had pin holes. Finally found some good Camel Hot patches on eBay, so I fixed the tubes yesterday.
Wonder if anyone still makes hot patches? Used to be several makers including Monkee Grip, Camel and even Wards / Sears / JC Penney / Western Auto house brands. They are the best! Sure wish I knew where to buy more new ones.
Here's how they work:
1. Scuff the tube with the lid of the box.
Take a patch out of the cellophane, pull the vinyl from the sticky side and apply it to the tube.
Clamp it in the fixture and set the back side on fire so it can be permanently vulcanized.
Royce - I don't happen to have a current catalog handy, but if you can find one, you might take a look in a J.C. Whitney catalog. They just might still carry those patches and inner tube repair kits,.......harold
I get my stick on patches from a motor cycle shop They might have the hot patches too. Lee
Campbell is in Muskogee, Ok.
Fellows, I once asked my tyre technician about using that type of patch and his experience was that with modern butyl type rubber tubes, the stick-on patches were far superior. He told me that the vulcanising patches worked well on the old rubber tubes, as the patch was made of the same type of rubber, and the heat virtually welded the patch on. The patch material and the tube needed to be made of the same material for the best results.
For what it's worth.
Allan from down under.
I've not found the hot patches anywhere anymore, probably also a problem with the "fire & smoke" of them. Allan has a great point about modern tubes; maybe a change of materials has changed things.

I bet the cost of shipping them HAZMAT has something to do with the reason they are not made any more. I don't think Model T tubes are made any differently. They have exactly the same problems as always.
The tube I just patched got its hole when the schrader valve decided to dump pressure while I was driving. It chafed a small hole in the sidewall area. With the hole patched and a new schrader it is going to be a fine spare under the seat.
I have two tubes that had rubber stems where the stem came apart. Not much trouble to change them over to metal stems to fix that problem.
Royce,
I had given up finding anymore hot patches, even on eBay, so now I'll have to keep that search open again. Back when I rode a bicycle everywhere, a hot patch kit was in my little "duffel bag" under my seat. I never trusted them "glue on" patches!

I got about 20 patches, ten each of the round and diamond shaped ones for $12 so it was a pretty good day.
