What grade are rod cap bolts> someone told me they were grade 8 but in torquing them some of them seem soft and what torque value should they be? i am trying 40 Ft/Lbs.

40 ft/lbs is more than enough, I use 30 ft/lbs and never had a problem.
A good alternative to stock bolts is to use Chev 350 rod bolts, once you file the knurling down they fit perfect and have a self locking nut.

I use 35, would be comfortable with 30.

My advice is don't use original bolts and nuts. I apparently overtightned one bolt on #1 rod cap. Three years later it stripped and damaged the bearing. Chaffins makes a grade 8 bolt that looks original. Only use if it fits well. If it doesn't fit well you get inconsistent readings when you use platigage. If it isn't snug then use a chevy 350 bolt and file it down to fit. Also use self locking nuts not castellated. My "T" still isn't running. I coulda, shouda, wouda. Like they say when you know better you do better.
