...is ok to help separate stuck parts?

This unit needs to be taken apart to replace the bearings inside, and it sure seems to be aluminum and steel that have been (I think) screwed together for assembly:

unit 01

unit 02

I put some heat on it, enough to make the old oil smoke a lot and to make the old oil bubble out some at the joint, but I didn't want to overheat the aluminum. How much can I put on it to help get the two pieces apart without hurting anything? (Right now it is soaking in 50-50 acetone/ATF.)

Thanks for any help.

Aluminum melts around 1,000 F depending on the alloy. If you heat it up to where the oil is bubbling and burning off, you will be OK. Let it cool down then and try taking it apart.

Next time heat it and quench it.
It may take a time or two but it will do the trick.

Ok, thanks, guys.
I will give it a few more tries...

Left hand thread?

Ken, I'll check that, too. I can't find any set-screws, pins, etc., that might be holding it in place, so I am guessing it is screwed on. I'll give it a good turn both ways. Thanks for the idea.

Well, after soaking and a couple rounds of heat and quenching, this just slips apart...no threads, not twisting, it just slid off.

together

apart 1

apart 2

Now we'll see how the rest of it goes.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
