Great post, Herb. One of our hand tool lines up to about 10 years ago, was S-K. Held in high regard by the mill wrights in these parts.
Yea,I have several S-k tools and they went to china. But they still will honor the warrenty so I reckon I will send off the broke 1's soon.
I'm far from being a professional mechanic. Heck I barely qualify as a shadetree mechanic. But I've bought craftsman hand tools for years. They're not all that expensive but I've never broke one. And I always figure if I do break one I think, I hope anyway, that they'll still replace it. I've also hung on to and protected my old dwell meter and timing light because I still have a tendency to play with old cars that can still be tuned the "old fashioned" way.
Craftsman quality has gone down the tubes in the last 10-15 years. Ive broken plenty of them old and new. screwdrivers are the worst. They used to break. Now they bend, and it doesn't take a cheater wrench to do it. I've twisted the blades with my bare hands on really tight screws. I've always had them replaced with no problem, but some report problems in that area.
I'm with Hal on this one.
Broke a lot of Craftsman screwdrivers and they were always replaced.
I have not bent them but I might not be as strong as Hal.
I learned that just because a tool says Craftsman it doesn't mean they guarantee it.
(I understand the power tools not being covered.)
They did not replace a broken staple gun so bought a new one elsewhere.
I have given up on Craftsman and SK around here becuase SK won't stand behind it and Craftsman is a crap shoot to get it replaced.
