I picked up a Splitdorf coilbox and coil at an auction yesterday, single coil in box with round selector switch on front, dual HT terminals on bottom. Finger jointed box is warping badly and coming apart. Is it worth trying to salvage?

I also got another wooden coil that looks similar to a Pittsfield coil. Does anyone have information on those. I do have some pics but we're heading off to a movie now.

Regards,
Garnet

What do you want to know? I repair and rebuild both types, and reproduce Splitdorf boxes and coils.

I'm curious as to what the expected resistance is of the coils RV. The more I handle it, the more the finger joints spread apart so I have just set it aside for now. The other coil which outwardly resembles a Pittsfield coil only read about 58 ohms on one set of terminals and I could read nothing else thru it with the ohmmeter.

A (1-cyl) Split firing 2 plugs should have about 6K resistance. FWIW, yours is about 1905 vintage.

The Pitts has a short if you are reading the meter correctly, and there's no reason to think you're not.

Very few original Splits have both good usable windings and cases. They do exist but aren't common. That's why I make new ones.
