Once again I am working on the Barn find. So it goes with out saying that what is or is not on the truck may not be correct. Is there supposed to be a spring on the hand crank of my TT ? If it is supposed to have one what does it push against on the crank itself? I would think that it would just follow the bend and not do anything. Sorry about the dumb questions, but I could really use some help so I can put the apron and crank back together.
Many thanks,
Yes,the spring fits into a hole on the crank and works against the back of thimble on the apron.
I second that, yes they all do up to 1927.
Mark, sometimes the hole gets filled with rust and may be a bit hard to find. Try sandblasting the crank or use a wire wheel. Keep looking, it is there. Dave
Thanks guys I don't see the hole as of right now. I'll wire wheel the crank and see what it reveals. I assume that I am looking for a hole appox 1/8 inch or so.
Here is a recent crank spring thread with pictures: http://www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/257047/291349.html?1337850472
How convenient that Mark has opened a thread on the spring for the hand crank !
My spring became disengaged from it's little hole in the crank the other day, and when I tried to reinsert it, the spring only went into the hole by about 1/4 inch. And it doesn't want to stay inserted.
I'm suspecting that there is a broken-off piece of the spring down in the hole. Can someone tell me about how deep the hole in the crank handle is supposed to be ? If there really is a piece broken off in the hole, the only way I can think to get it out is with an EDM machine. Any other suggestions ?
Dick
If you have trouble removing a hard broken off piece in the hole, you can always drill a new hole on the opposite side of the crank. Won't hurt anything if it's too deep. Very few will notice the modification
