Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Help: need a bearing fast

hey guys. So my engine is all but set to go back together. Saturday my local club is throwing me a BBQ to put my engine back together along with the parts they got for me. I have everything I need, but something is holding me up/ The bearing/cap that holds the piston arm to the crank shaft has a small chip in the corner of it. I was told it would run, but i'd rather get a better bearing/cap. Does Lang's sell these bearings/caps? I saw they sell "front/center" crankshaft bearings: is this what I am looking for? Or am I out of luck beacuase I need one fast?

Matthew,
Are you talking about a main bearing cap or a rod bearing cap? Normally the rod bearing cap is matched to the rod. If the rod bearing is bad, the bearing is re-poured or the rod replaced.

A good quality photo of your "chipped" cap would help folks tell if you have a problem with the one you have.
Jim

Matthew, don't worry about it. A small chip most likely won't hurt a thing, it will probably run for many many miles. Button it up and drive it. These T's aren't Swiss watches after all.JMHO. Dave

David, I'm with you. I think people forget sometimes that these aren't high revving race engines. I also agree with Jim. It sure sounds like he's describing a rod cap. If Matthew could post a picture for us or at least a decent description of how big the chip is it would help. I think I'd be more concerned about using some plastigage to determine the clearances. It sounds like he's got some good friends to come over and help him assemble his engine. If they're any good at all they'll be able to tell if the bearing will work. Good luck Matthew. I hope it works out for you.

A rule of thumb I was once told, and have used, was if there was at least 80% babbit to crankshaft contact, it's good enough.

If it's a rod bearing cap, I'd button it up and run it. It's easily accessed above the inspection pan and can be replaced later, if desired, with minimal effort and likely a little oil in the face!

Yes, it is the rod cap. It's just a small chip in the corner of the cap, not big at all. It's going back in then. I wish I had my camera to take photos/video for you guys: with any luck my part by part T build will be running real soon! I am very excited. Thanksfor the help again: this forum has saved my butt multiple times.
