Here is the latest on our speedster, "The Becker Special". It has been a while since we last had a post going for this car....so I thought I would fill you in on the latest.

We finally got all the body work done and in paint...

I got the striping almost done...

..along with some other finishing touches..

before moving on to final assembly..

I have liked that car from the first pictures of it.
Now I have a fault finder's comment.
I think it would look PERFECT if the fuel tank and trunk were a teeeeensie bit larger. Or raised up a couple of inches.

That's quite a rig.

Aaron,

I haggled with that for quite some time, but ultimately decided that the current size fit the car best. Since the car is a "baby Mercer", I scaled down the trunk from an original Type 35J Raceabout and tried to keep it in proportion to both the car itself and the stock round early T fuel tank. The trunk on the original Mercer does sit below the fender line just as much as ours does and that is after we did raise it 2-3/4".

Any larger and I think the gas tank would have looked smaller then it already does.

WOW,,,,What a great job you did. That is something to be proud of knowing all you did.

Clayton, you guys warm an old man's heart. It almost makes me think there's hope for 'the youth' after all. Most of the younger folks I run into don't have the mechanical aptitude to change the battery in an 'I-Pod' without googling the instructions first. Keep the pictures of both cars coming. :-)

By the way, what's that sitting in front of "the Special". If this ol Hot Rodder had to make an educated guess, I'd say it's a customized 51/52 Chevy Convert.

Nice to see this car about finished.

Dennis,

We try :-) That is a very true point, but I have found in my travels that there are quite a few other "youngsters" out there that have an intrest and the talent for this sort of thing....more then you might think, so keep that hope alive..

..we sure will :-)

You are of course dead on about the other car, though it is actually a '51 hardtop....same body as the convert though...just has the top welded in. :-)

I was a 6 year old boy when that car was a new car.

Thanks Paul! :-)

With a little over two years of work into it, we are pleased with what we accomplished...We over shot our 6 month goal, but are happy none the less.

...still not out of the woods yet though...
