hey guys, some of you may remember that I was asking transmission and engine questions awhile back. Last week my Ford club "rehauled" my engine for me (we're finishing up this Sunday). We cut the valve seats and discovered a crack that runs clean from the seat to the top of my #2 cylinder. They said it would run like this, but to be careful. They recommended a guy in Massachusettes that does "cold stitching" to fix it. Any feedback on this?

How bad does THAT suck....... :-(
Crack runs from the seat right TO the cylinder bore?
This is not good.
If the crack has coolant on the underside of it it will be a miracle if it doesn't leak. You'll be the first to know so keep an eye open for milky oil.
I'm not so sure another block wouldn't be a better solution........

i think mine has those cracks. It will run but will have less problems if you have valve seat inserts (don't put them in unless you need to they fall out sometimes) Not sure exactly what cold stitching is but if it is the thing where they drill holes in the crack and put threaded things in it go for it if you can get it done affordably (or do it yourself?) Some people will try to talk you into expensive machining but there was this maori guy who fitted an oversize piston, just one, to his car by filing the bore with a half round file. Took a long time. That is unless you need to bore it, Then you can use a machine shop filing takes too long.

Is your engine a 26-7? I have found that those cracks are real common for those years. The best way to permanent fix them is to sleeve it and seat it, there is no water jacket on that side of the valve so you are safe. If you just seat it the compression can still leak under the seat, through the cylinder wall. I know this is not what you want to hear, but hope this helps out!
