My starter bendix drive gears balancing ring has an ear that is broken. My understanding is that the stop nut is a press on fit - with 2 dimples to hold it in place.

What is the best way to remove the bendix's stop nut "and put it back on" so I can replace the drive gear and balancing ring?

The stop nut is threaded onto the drive shaft (not a press fit. After screwing it onto the shaft during installation, the end of the shaft is upset from inside the drive shaft into the two holes on the stop nut. Simply remove the two upset areas into the stop nut from the outside with a small punch and unscrew the stop nut. It may be tight so try a pair of water pump plies with something to prevent scoring the stop nut. The stop nut is VERY hard and difficult to damage.
