I received this today:

"Hello,
How are you? My name is John, this is in regard to your posted ad on www.mtfca.com I have been on google for some time now surfing and furtunately i finaly came across your advert and am highly interested. What is your asking price? please could you tell me if the advert is still for sale? And could you also tell me more about its present condition.
I will await your response.Write back soon.

Thank You.

John."

Well now, MISTER HOLMES, I find it amusing that you found my ad on the MTFCA, because since 1996 when the website was created, I HAVE NEVER LISTED ANYTHING FOR SALE IN THE CLASSIFIED. The only Model T item I ever sold anywhere is a spare tire carrier.

Oh....why bother, he won't read it anyway.....

I doubt he would read it either. To think if John was looking for T parts,he was "looking" around in all the wrong places for all those years.

The next step in this scam would likely take one of 2 forms. He will advise you he has a freight forwarding or shipping company that handles all of his shipping. He will then send you supposed certified payment that is an over payment with enough funds to cover the items PLUS shipping. He will ask you to use the excess funds to pay the shipper (himself). The money you pay the shipper is the scam. His certified payment will prove to be a fraud.

The second possibility is that he will ask if he can pay you via credit card. This they typically offer a business since they figure a business takes credit cards. The credit card info is stolen info typically and they will attempt to buy anything with those cards that they think they can then sell. After you take their card and ship the item you will find the original owner of the card will notify their charge plate company of your incorrect charging of their card and the bank will take you money back on a "charge back".

Lots of scoundrels out there. We are sort of lucky in that we can rather easily tell if someone knows anything about Model T stuff or not and thus whether the transaction is goofy sounding and likely a scam. We are old school and want the cash and that foils them 99% of the time.

We are also very cheap so a seller immediately spots a scam if the buyer is willing to pay full price without any attempt at negotiation :-) No self respecting Model T person would do that - it would be un-American.

Scamers keep looking for ways around anti-spam/virus applications. I get several of these a month, from my various web sites. Note, they don't mention the 'item' .. just the 'advert'. If it were real, they would mention the real item, and ask intelligent questions about it.

If the email came from a reputable domain ... I forward the email, including headers, back to the domain administrator. i.e. if it was an email from freddie@gmail.com, I would forward the info to abuse@gmail.com. Most reputable domains and web sites, have such an account. (sometimes support@gmail.com, etc).

Usually, though .. it's a waste of time. Many of these aren't looking to get your money. They want you to reply, so they can capture your email address, and sell as a 'known good address', as a human replied.

(Insert bad word of choice here) ... is what they is....

Dennis

William
I got the same message this morning at approx: 2am from Mr. Holmes he was interested in my advert as well !
I haven't listed anything in several months either I'm sure anything I had listed has already rolled off the bottom of the list long ago.....
But we need to be careful who we label as a scamer I'm not going to use that bad word anymore it seems to hurt there feelings, so I'm just going to refer to all S@$# ERS as folks we need to watch from now on. That's much more humane !!!!
The world is a sad sad place these days.......
