I have to change my bands,Langs has a changing tool is it possible to do it without have having this tool
If you are talking about the springy loopy thingy NO unless you want to swear yourself to Hell.......and even WITH the tool you may come close that anyway.......
I have tried that tool and don't think it helps much. I prefer to take the hogshead off anyway, it makes for maybe an extra hour of work plus the extra $10 worth of felt and gasket.
Royce, I agree.
It depends if your bands are the later style with the detachable ears, or the earlier style with the ears riveted on. I've changed later style bands through the transmission cover door, but it's still pretty tricky. In the end, like Royce mentioned, I found that it was best just to remove the hogshead, no matter what style of bands they are. I think that it makes for a lot less headache.
Not to mention the hogshead isn't actually that difficult to remove!
Ooops! I didn't actually answer your question about the tool!
I found that the tool doesn't help much, although I've always felt that it was user error more than anything. Long story short, I believe that it's actually EASIER to do the bands without the tool, and if you do remove the hogshead, the tool gives you no advantages at all.
After doing it without the tool, I wouldn't be without it. It does take a bit to fish it around because it want's to follow the down hill angle of the pan and you still need a wire with a loop to fish the ear of the reverse band back around. Just have a wipe cloth handy for all the oil on it!
To answer the original question: Yes it is possible to do it without that tool the vendors sell.
Farmboys like me use a stiff wire such as a coathanger or any kind of stiff wire with a hook on the end. It does work and pretty good I might add. I tried the band tool but a stiff wire works just as good.
Once you get the wire of whatever in position you can pull out the band.
