Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: New shoes needed some tweaking......

After the axle re-build, installed the rear and test ran it on the jack stands. All quiet on the southern front :-).

So mounting up the rear wheels and test turned, heard some scrape, scrape, sounds...:-(

What was found is that the new repro cast iron/lined shoes were striking the hub nuts.

That was odd, as have always ground down the hub bolt ends, and staked the nuts tight, just to be sure noting hits.

But...the new cast iron/lined shoes were hitting the nuts, the new shoes have a bit longer section for the brake cam to ride on, that part projects out a bit too far.

Here is a comparison of the new one (background) and a NOS Ford cast brake shoe, note the difference at the section for the cam.

This close up shows the part, with bright mark where the already ground down nuts were hitting the new shoe.

So......a trip to the bench grinder....and off with the impinging section of the new shoe, this angle grind did the trick, rear wheel traveling smoothly now...no rub a dub in the drum :-)

Now maybe others haven't had this issue, but this is what was found today in the garage, and this method worked for me. BTY, the new shoes are really nice in all other respects...!

Dan: I thought they were AC. I have a set on my '12 Torpedo. The lining is different color, that was the reason for asking. JP

Had to do that same thing with mine couple days ago.

I put a set of lined shoes on a friend's car and had the same problem. Other than that they work great.

Dan,
Thank you for the thoughtful advisory! No big problem to complain about. But your posting could easily save someone a little time and teardown.
That car is looking good!
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2

Went through the exact same thing. I had ground and staked the hub bolts and still ended up having to grind on the new shoes. That area on the shoes for the cam is just a wee bit too big.

I know we should be glad new parts are available, and I am. And I know that a little grinding on the shoes to make them fit is no big deal. But I also agree with Ron Patterson that If you're making Model T parts you should make them to match the original parts. I'm no casting expert, so I have to ask: in this case would it be any more difficult to make the part identical than to make it different?
