Dobson is in the foot hills in the north part of North Carolina. I am taking my Model T and I am sure there will be lots more. The tour is for the whole week. It is put on by the HCCA, but they are allowing cars 1927 and older, so that means lots of T's. I think the event is booked, but worth an unregistered look at the cars.

About 40 out of 62 cars are T's. Photos to follow next week.

What is the car with the bathtub under the hood?

You have thoroughly piqued my curiosity. I'm a national HCCA director, and I've never heard of this tour! It hasn't been advertised either in the Horseless Carriage Gazette or on the HCCA website, but it's drawn 62 cars? It's obviously a regional, not a national, tour since post-1915 cars are allowed. But that's OK - we publicize those tours, too, when someone tells us about them. Would someone please post some details so I can learn a bit more about what my own club is doing? Thanks, guys!

The Stanley is 1910. Stopped every 25 miles for water at people's homes, fire stations, and creeks. It has a pump onboard for drawing water from a creek.

The Locomobile is 1924. Capable of cruising at 75 mph.

The Locomobile is a beast of a car. Weighs nearly what a locomotive does also.

Amazing machine.

Gil - this tour was the 61st Annual Tour of the North Carolina Regional Group of the HCCA. We had 62 cars registered and approximately 140 people attended. Each day we averaged about 80 miles and we drove along some really beautiful routes in the foothills of NC and VA and along the Blue Ridge Parkway as well. As always, the best part was spending time with friends in the car hobby. We always have such a great time!

Our regional group permits cars manufactured through 1927 to participate in our events and we usually have a nice variety of different makes of cars represented. We are excited about the fact that we have many young people that are active in the club and they enjoy driving their own cars on our tours.

The tour was advertised in recent issues of the HCCA Gazette but it was not listed on the HCCA website this year. I will make a special effort to submit something for the website about our future events. Every year our tour is held the third week in July and we’re always happy to have new folks join us!

Kind regards,
Natalie Peiffer
Secretary/Treasurer
NC Regional Group, HCCA

While every steamer has a special place in my heart, I particularly like the T Speedster and the unrestored T Touring cars. Fascinating.

Thank you, Natalie. I probably saw the ad in a prior Gazette and realized that, as much as your tour sounded like fun, I wouldn't be able to make it this year. I trailered my T to the Midwest tour in Minnesota, followed by the 75th Anniversary tour in Colorado Springs (command appearance, since there was a board meeting and I'm a director, although a couple of board members were spooked by the fires and opted out), and a week at a Colorado dude ranch with family, followed by the trip home. I knew I'd be plumb trailered out, and I was. But where you went sounds like my kind of touring, so maybe I'll try it next year, if you'll let me in.

By the way, would you please send me your e-mail address? Mine is in the current HCCA roster. Many thanks.

Is that Andy Robeson's Stanley? He seems to be doing better and better with it. He survived the VERY hilly (i.e. Alpine) 1&2-cylinder tour in western Pennsylvania this year. I have one like it, a year later, that I'm going to sell.

It's true you spend a lot of time looking for and taking on water in a Stanley. When I chuff up to someone's house and ask for water, it turns into a media event. Everyone and his maiden aunt wants his picture taken with the Stanley. It's fun but, on a long tour when you might need three water stops before lunch, it's sobering to realize someone with a Sears highwheeler could have left after you and beaten you to the lunch stop, arriving while was still food. Of course, when I caught up to that highwheeler, I'd rocket past him with a blast of the steam whistle and a big grin on my face - and then I'd realize it was almost time for another water stop!

Gilbert,

Yes, Andy Roberson's Stanley. He was helped a lot by Daryl Kendall. Andy's wife, Jean, was there too.
