Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Help with Coils in eastern NC

Was driving my '14 speedster today and I guess one of my coils died. The engine started missing and I limped home on 3 cylinders. I checked all my wiring and ended up shuffling the coils around and the problem is definitely just the coil.

I have 7 coils, 4 of the newer plastic ones, and 3 very old wooden ones. When I first got the car running a couple months ago I had cleaned all the points and then set them according to the Ford service manual. What I ended up with was 3 or the plastic coils and one of the wooden ones that made the car run smoothly. One of the wooden ones does nothing at all, and then other wooden one and plastic one will only work intermittently and only at very low engine rpm's.

So now one of the 3 good plastic boxed coils has died and I'm stuck. I played around with my 3 good coils (2 plastic 1 wood) and tried to coax the remaining 2 plastic coils or the one semi-decent wood coil into cooperating with me, but to no avail.

Is there anybody on here in roughly eastern NC that has a coil tester and any experience with these crazy things? I emailed Ron the Coil Man today since most folks I've seen on here swear by him, but he's overseas until August 2nd (and has who knows how many orders to catch up with when he gets back), and I don't know what he'll charge to me to fix these babies anyway. I'd like to either get him to fix my 7 coils, or maybe just buy 4 new ones and keep my one good plastic one and wooden one as backups. Just depends on the price. I don't want to just get one replacement because there's no telling when any of these others will go.

IN THE MEAN TIME! I'd really like to get back on the road with my T, since only yesterday did I finally get the paperwork straight and get a license plate on it. It totally sucked to finally get the car in good working order, get a plate, drive it to work on a gorgeous sunny day, and then limp home. Lame. Anyways, any help or suggestions are much appreciated.

The plastic ones will run fine on battery, but if you go to mag the capacitor is not correct. If you try the plastic on the hand crank coil machine it will spark every other one, I have been there done this. I use to rebuild my own then I found Ron and Brent, now they can have the fun at doing what they do best and I can spend my time helping others get there cars running in other ways. Brent Mize is out of Reynoldsburg Ohio and he is still around to help.

I run late KW plastic coils and they work perfectly on battery and mag.

I have rebuilt the plastic ones, but for some reason, had a heck of a time getting them adjusted on the hcct. I swore I wouldn't do any more plastic ones. Maybe it was just coincidence, but they were no fun. And yes, the capacitors in them are not up to snuff.

Bonus! Thanks for the info. I'll send mine to Brent and see what he can do. Until it died, they ran fine on battery and magneto. I'm going to call/email him today and see if he will set these up to run happily when I'm on mag.
