Model T Ford Forum: Forum 2012: Possible Model T Greyhound Hood Ornament?!

Hi all!

We have found this hood ornament in a box along with Model T parts and we have been trying to identify it, so we can get a valuation for it. We think that it's from the Model T, but if anyone could confirm it that would be brilliant!

Thank you :-)

Olivia,

Close to the Model T but actually used on the Lincoln motor cars.

The AACA forum had a post on this back in 2002.

More information is available here.

They were also used on Ford V8s.

However, your ornament does not have the same lines and is not to as high quality or graceful as the genuine article. It is probably an aftermarket mascot that could be attached to any car.

Greyhounds were used on Lincoln's and then later on early V8's, but they looked very different from the one in the photo above.

The Lincoln and early V8 hood ornaments had the front legs extended pointing forward. The tail rolled down and then pointed up at the end.

Ivan, The grey dog was standard on the Lincolns but I am quite sure it was an aftermarket thing made by somebody else on the other cars. The bottom picture you show is on a '33 or '34 Ford cap. I am VERY sure that did not come from the factory on any car.
Kinda like the quail on a model A.
Since the model A body was designed to resemble a Lincoln there were several things you could buy to transform an A into a Baby Lincoln.

Ivan, why not post a picture of your families' two Lincolns? I have not seen them for a few years.

Dan, that photo does not do justice to the beautiful green color of your car.

That was on the terrace at Blackhawk a month or so ago. The sun burns out the color and bright light makes it look almost black.
You were supposed to post a picture of your Lincolns! I guess I will have to... I don't think I have one of the touring, though.
How's your grandmother? I couldn't get her and your grandfather out of my head this morning. I was remembering her father (your great grandfather). Your people really are top notch and I miss Cy

Well here is the phaeton. You can barely see the hound on the front. I love seeing your dog with the scarf around the neck.

There is a gentlemen in the San Jose area that has a Lincoln in which the dogs eyes had ruby's installed in the 30's. It is very subtle and fantastic looking.

That ornament part appears to be like the English AC Bristol 1939 radiator cap.

Olivia,
I have a whippet (willies) with almost the same one

Yes a Whippet is a small but fast dog that does look like a little greyhound.
Willys built the Whippet to be light weight but fast, therefore Whippet is a fitting name for the car.
The engine in the Whippet is the engine that was used in the WWII Jeeps. The Whippet had smaller head bolts, otherwise that was the same engine.

The Overland Whippet car ornament was supported from the middle of the body.
