Hello all,
You all have been so helpful to me in the past I was wondering if I ask another question? I just put new valves in my engine 26/27. I now have a miss on #3 cylinder. There is spark getting to plug, I tried putting multiple plugs in and none worked. I check for a manifold leak and doesn't appear to have one. Can I take off valve cover and run engine without oil going all over the place? What else should I check. I have had my T for 5 years and still label myself a newbie.
The last time I had that problem, it was a bad coil. Mine made the plug fire laying on the head. I did a valve job and that didn't fix it, then I swapped coils. Try that first! You can take the cover off with it not running and turn crank by hand and make sure you have a gap and the valve is not sticking open.
Thanks Mike,
I have a distributor so I think the coil is ok if its running and it a new coil. I am going to take the cover off and check for a sticking valve.
Tim,
To answer your question, "Can I take off valve cover and run engine without oil going all over the place?" Yes, not a problem. The first Model T engines did not have a valve covers. You may get a little oil but not much.
Checking for a sticky valve may be a good place to look. Have you did a compression check?

No have not done compression check yet, that is also in line to be done as well.
Tim
I'd wager it has something to do with one of the #3 valves. Possibly a broken valve spring or valve spring retainer pin? Jim Patrick
Just my 2 cents
Check the distributor cap and rotor, wire and plug as well. Start with the simple before assuming the worst. Damaged valve or spring should/could be coupled with an unusual noise.
