lately my 1926 model t has been working well, although sometimes i've heard a popping sound (quite loud) under the pedals. i can't say exactly when the sound arrives because it seems to come at different time (and not in connection with "being in run" etc)--although my memory could be faulty.
today there was these loud sounds, seemingly randomly occurring. then i found that a) the transmission brake no longer works, b) low gear no longer works. in other words, the pedals push all the way in with no effect. looking inside the transmission, all the bands are fine.
what tests can i do to find out what the trouble is?
as a possibly unrelated side question, i notice that my rear driver's wheel spins almost too easily while the right rear wheel spins with a sense of being connected to the differential and such. is that normal?
Drive line issues, suspect the rear axle has negated its function. Anything from U-joint, sheared pin, or busted, pinion gear key, or gear, most likely the ring and pinion mesh is gone now and the axle is spinning freely due to thrust washers disintegrated and leaving a big gap with end play.
Jack up the rear, both wheels off the floor, and push and pull on the wheel....lots of give means gap due to thrust washers now missing.

The rear axle needs to be rebuilt.
Stephen
many thanks! i will commence a rebuild.
If high gear and reverse still work you might find the problem is in the engine room. If the triple gears came off it would only be low and reverse that no longer work but if the brake stopped working yet high still works that sounds weird.
Could be a broken axle on the drivers side.

If the triple gears "came off", the engine wouldn't even begin to run as the pile of scrap metal inside would have everything locked up tight.
