I installed my rear end today and noticed the front and rear ball caps have about a 1/4" gap between them. i bolted them together and they pulled tight with ease.is this normal or should they fit tight together with no bolts installed?

Seems fairly normal to me, not usually 1/4" but often 1/8"

Don't forget to safety wire the bottom 2 bolts.

Should not be any gap - did you leave out the 4th main?

The rear spring might be slightly angled toward the rear in the rear chassis cross member, which could easily account for the space. I would loosen the crossmember to spring clamps and attach the drive shaft housing to the ball cap, then tighten the clamps back up.

PS Would the R & L radial arm adjustments have anything to do with this? I seem to remember mine having more threads showing behind the rear lock nut.
