hey guys,
i've been asking questions on engines for awhile now because i'm rebuilding my engine in my part by part build T. I'm really hoping to get it running around the yard before I go back to college in four weeks. I need to know, what is the soacing/gap between the coil and magnets, and how do I,well,...pretty much the whole process of putting the tranny back on aligned correctly
Hi Matthew. I did mine in 2010. Here are two threads documenting the experience. The first thread shows a vertical stand I made for my engine to keep the rear of the engine in an upright position and the second thread tells how I accomplished the trial and error task. It took about a dozen times of removing and rebolting the transmission to the crankshaft in order to try a variety of shim thickness combinations. I had a magneto gap gauge that I purchased from Snyder's that was supposed to make the job easier, but I never could get the hang of it so I did it the old fashioned way and sold the gap gauge on ebay for more than what it cost me to purchase it from Snyders. Matthew---get the Model T transmission booklet, published by the MTFCA. It covers all details and is easy to follow---Paul
0.025 at the top 0.040 at the bottom. Some people stand the engine on its nose to aline the ball cap but i found the engine falls on my toes if i try that, Still a good idea though.
Not less than .025 or more than .040. You may give the bottom .005 more than the top.
Steve Jeff usually comments on these type of questions but since he hasent yet I will.
Paul in one of the above posts says to get the MFTCA Transmission manual which is the best advice there is.
Also use or get the Ford T shop manual which is helpful.
I did mine in a way that is similiar to what Jim Patrick did in his post.
Before you attempt it read and get as much information as you can on the subject.
The old saying also rings true. "When in doubt read the instructions".
There is plenty on how to do this.
Thanks guys. I have the manuals and read up on it. Makes me a little nervous thinking about screwing it up. Fortunately it looks like I won't have to do it myself. The president of my Ford chapter is coming over Friday evening to help me do it and to see how much of the engine we can get back together in a few hours time (time to start weeding through those labeled baggies of nuts and bolts I made ;) )
Thank you for all of the responses, this young newbie appreciates all of the help. I'll be sure to post video and photos of the car running as soon as that happens (next comes the rear end rebuild!)
Matthew,
You never know... when I redid the engine in the touring when I was of the tender age of 17 I put her together (original magnets, coil ring etc..) mounted it up and to my amazement prefect gap top and bottom with no shimming. Still runs on Mag to this day.
Good luck with your project. Let us know how it turns out.
Larry
