Hey guys...

Just inspecting the rear outer bearings..

Do these look ok to you? Does the fact that they 'hang' below the retainer washer indicate that they are worn?

Thanks!

It doesn't look bad but that doesn't mean it isn't. You need to measure the diameter of the rollers at each end. Ideally, you would like them to be no smaller than .495" in diameter. You also should have the cages relatively tight, meaning if you grab each end and twist the cage it should not flex, or at least not very much.

You need to check the roller diameters with a micrometer to ascertain wear on each one. Ideally, you want .497-.498. Others might disagree but I have yet to find a .500 roller.

By all means measure it, but when I took the rear outer bearings out of my TT there was no doubt that the one on the right side was shot. Both ends of all the rollers were worn to a nice rounded shape. Subject to measuring, yours looks pretty good.

Rollers straying inside the ring is mo problem. When there's an axle in there it doesn't happen. As the others have said, .003 or less wear is OK. The only way you'll find them with no wear is NOS (getting pretty scarce) or new. I've been told by knowledgeable T guys that the new bearings aren't as bad as their reputation, but they're certainly not as good as originals with minimum wear. In a car that's going to be driven more than a few miles a year, I'd go with original Hyatts.

I've found them at swap meets and auctions.

Anyone know where I can buy a pair of Hyatt outer bearings?

I think the NOS bearings are .499.

But I would recommend to ask questions about tightness and dimensions first..
