Is the nut shown in the photo supposed to be tightened down hard, or are the two pieces of metal supposed to be able to move?nut

Might make no big difference, the brackets support the back of the band, with springs,...but...just to be safe, (well you know, the Ford does shake off it's nuts and bolts from time to time)...I drilled the nut in two places and placed cotter key after the brackets were fitted.



Used the original Ford parking brake bolt, with its cotter hole, and then fitted the thin nut. The parking brake bolt doesn't need to turn,once you fit the iron parking brake shoes,... if it gets loose, the iron shoes could wiggle more. So figured that a cotter pin is needed at that place, more for the emergency brake shoes, than the brackets for the RM's.

Thanks, just had these RMBs installed and within 1 hour one nut had disappeared and the other was loose.

Those two brackets which are attached by that nut are to be placed in a position that the brake band will turn That is on the right side, the slot on the bottom bracket is toward the back and the slot on the top bracket is toward the front. That way when the band is tightened, it will move in the slot and not move the bracket. It is possible that application of the brake caused the nut to loosen because the brackets were improperly placed. I have those brakes and the nuts have not come off in 5 years.
I don't use cotter pins, but I think Dan's idea is a good one.

I think I got everything backward. The slot on either side of the car should be as follows. The slot on the bottom should be toward the front of the car and the slot on the top should be toward the back of the car so that the band will move in the slot and not move the bracket when it moves. Sorry for the confusion.

My theory is that you swing the arms around for the best all around brake band clearance and then lock them in place.

It you let them self adjust they may have a constant drag and heat up.
