Three weeks ago, I placed an order with Snyder's for maintenance parts I needed plus a few sets of coil points needed for customer's coils.

I was very happy with the quality of the new run of points.... the limiting rivit is set correctly in travel & level, the upper bridge is made from a stronger metal and the tungsten points are more secure & in the right positions.

I held back delivery of the first set of rebuilt coils to test the retention of the adjustment. After 2 weeks I found the same average amperage draw on each coil had not changed..... a far cry from the results of the previous run of coil points......

The only minor drawback was the cushion spring tension needed more tension to eliminate double & triple sparking on the HCCT.

Conversely, lessening the cushion spring tension proved to be more difficult due to the better bridge metal composition...... which means the adjustment will last !! Used John Regan's cushion spring tool, necessary for accurate settings.

I applaud the maker of these quality point sets for stepping up correcting prior problems.

Would this appear to be a new lower point and old upper point? The set evidently was purchased this way.

James:

I had observed towards the end of the former manufacturer's run of point sets, the size of the contacts did indeed differ, especially the cushion spring point.... which made the limiting rivit adjustment almost impossible with Patterson's tool.

Robert Branson of Branson Enterprises, Rockford, IL, bought the KW points and coil business.
Last time I talked to Bob he said he had sourced half hard brass and remedied a cushion rivet problem.
I've done business with Ken and Robert for many years......Ken cracks me up....... LOL ....... :-)

This is one of Bransons' late ebay points auctions >>> http://www.ebay.com/itm/160852685075?item=160852685075&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME :X:eRTM:MOTORS:1123&vxp=mtr

I'll be seeing them at the Baraboo Steam & Gas Show, Wisconsin, soon and I'm going to grab a few sets.

Craig:

Seems interest in this subject may be relegated to the lurkers.

I see the improved quality of these point sets a big plus to the average T guy.

Now exists the potential for a ball park adjustment without the use of a HCCT or other tester for any hobbiest to rebuild their own coils.

As long as the condenser is replaced with the proper modern capacitor & coil box re-potted with tar, point replacement/adjustment is now easier.

Bob,
You are probably right, as I looked this all over, and until now did not post. This is wonderful news, and let us hope it is a sign of a trend towards high quality in replacement parts!

I checked Bob's ebay current auctions and found this this listing where he greatly expands on his KW endeavor which I am placing here so it doesn't evaporate after the listing ends:

We are now the new owners of the K-W Ignition Company. We bought all machines, dies, molds and parts for the manufacture of plastic buzz coils for model T ford automobiles, clip type coils for universal uses, and sealed metal case coils for universal uses as well, as well as the manufacture of contact point sets. We have recently upgraded the machines, dies and materials and components for the manufacture of foresaid items. This auction is for a clip type coil for use on stationary gas engines, grain dryers, RR inspection cars, ie. Fairmont and others, and any other need to ignite a spark plug. These coils are all American made, parts included, and the clips are not soldered on, but riveted to the case before assembly. These coils are the hottest thing on the market, and are guaranteed FOREVER, and the points for 1 year. These will work on 6 Volt, up to 28 Volt, and everything in between. Clearly marked for easy application, and will be stamped with date purchased, and may be returned if there is any problem for full refund or replacement. If you buy 1 of these, you will never have to buy another.

I have 8 plastic KW coils and I love them.

Do those new coils have a correct size capacitor to work on a Model T AC Magneto or are they only designed to operate with a 12 Volt DC Battery?

The early style K-W points, used 1913-15, have been available for some time now. They are very similar to but still different from the "standard" points that everyone's familiar with. One of these is shown on the right in the photo below. Can you spot at least 7 differences from the later one on the left?
