I need your advice regarding the three differential housing bolts, this is the first differential that I have rebuilt. (1) Should the differential bolts be screwed down to the point that the shoulder meets the housing? My differential is an early 1914. (2)Should the nuts be secured with safety wire around the housing or should they be secured with carter pins. Seems to me that if you use the carter pins there is a possibility that the bolts can turn loose. I have also found that when I bottom out the bolts there isn't enough bolt left to secure the nut through the bolt hole. I would appreciate any advice that you can give me. Thanks, John

The ring gear bolts and nuts get safety wired, the 3 bolts that hold the case together, cotter pined. Yes the bolts should be tight. If the nuts do not screw down far enough to insert the cotter pin something is wrong with your assembly or you are trying to install the wrong bolts. With the fiber thrust washer install between the two axles and spider gear installed are both half's seating together?

Do you have the axle book? If not, it would be a wise investment.

I've disassembled many T axles and never found an intact fiber disc yet. I started using a brass washer of the same diameter and it seems to work better. I bet there is a washer in there some day when the next guy takes it apart.

I find a lot of intact fiber disc between the inner axle ends, if that is what we are talking about. BUT brass washers would probably be better. I have also heard of people putting in a ball bearing. For a long time I used teflon plastic which I also think is probably better than fiber

The early carrier uses studs with castle nuts. These must be safety wired. The later carrier uses a bolt and nut. These use a cotter pin.

I picked up bolt and nut from the description, if he has the studs safety wire would be correct.
