My friend said to me at work yesterday, "I saw a car at the DMV and thought of you. Here is a shot of it." I said, "Hey, I know that car." I bet you all do too.
It looks like they made it to Bonneville from what I heard.
Here is a thread at the HAMB with some updates on their trip: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=711728&page=3
Seems like the Becker Special broke the crank early on but Clayton's 26 got all the way to Boise when a fan hub gave trouble, so it had to be pulled some of the way on an u-haul trailer. Let's hope he'll get home on his own wheels
Yup broke the crank between 1 & 2. Was running real strong and all of a sudden bang and silence! So now I'll need a new crank, didn't damage any the new Babbitt bearings from what I can see.
DMV didn't like my car. It took about 3 hours for them figure out how to license the car as I didn't have any major receipts as the Special as it was built from spare parts we had for 30 years or more.
Clayton made it too Boise when the fan hub gave up the the ghost. We took it off and tried to drive it. Worked great till we ran into construction traffic which was stop and go. We put the roadster on the trailer so we could make it to Wendover before the sun came up the next morning. As it was we got to our hotel room at 2 am. We put a electric fan on as the temp where in the low hundreds and we wanted to keep the engine cool while there. We drove the roadster all the way home to Portland with a few minor glitches. Clayton should be putting up a post about our trip to Speed Week at Bonneville salt flats in Wendover Utah.
I was in bonneville last week myself, I was on the crew for car 906, its classed as B/ BMGR. It set a record at 257 mph before the blower seized and the 4 inch wide belt driving it shredded which got into the cam belt and threw cam timing off which in turn bent and broke valves, pistons, and pushrods. We got the red hat but that was one expensive hat.
Ouch! Jeff, I'll bet it was.
I don't feel so bad. I can get a crank but that engine sounds like it's toast.
