I'm am having a heck of a time keeping the 6 hub bolts tight on the floating rear hubs that are available from the parts suppliers. The bolts are regular carriage bolts with self locking (nylon insert) nuts. I have had three of them break off during the last few years and now this morning I noticed two more bolts were missing. Upon wheel removal, the other four bolts and nuts are LOOSE and really wiggly. This really scared the hell out of me as we have been driving this car a lot lately. Has anyone else had problems with these hubs and what did you do to solve the problem.
Convert it back to stock!
I bought AN/MS bolts and nuts from www.AircraftSpruce.com They sure held up better than the oak spokes...
You solve the problem by buying the better quality, correct wheel bolts, made by RV Anderson, and sold by the usual suppliers, and the appropriate nuts, and peening over the bolt ends as per Ford instructions.
I saw advice here on the forum to torque the wheel bolts for a wooden wheel one day, then wait and retorque another day and later in the week - the day when no nut moves anymore for the same torque it's time to peen over the bolt ends. Wood's a living material you know..
Tom,
