I have tried the 3 twelve volt battery method for charging my magneto. Did everything correct as far as i know but my magneto did not take charge. Am I missing something?

That only works on a weak magneto, if it is dead then the in car method will not likely bring it back.

You stated your mag did not take charge. If the mag puts out but the car misses badly then the likely source is coil point adjustment which need to be done on a tester that replicates the magneto.

It should have worked. If your system is 6V with a negative ground you need to use a compass to position a N magnet to the left of the mag post. If your magnets are too weak to do this through the hogshead, you will need to remove the hogshead to do it visually with the compass. Be sure and orient your car East to West so you can be sure the compass is reacting to the magnet and not to magnetic north. If you located your compass over a S magnet instead of a N magnet, your magnets will be discharged instead of charged. Review the process I successfully used in the following thread: www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/118802/159978.html.

The in car recharge still requires a good mag coil. If it is open or shorted near the output terminal, it wouldn't work with good magnets and won't work to charge them.

Very True, James. I misunderstood Gary. I thought he meant that this method would not work if the the magnets are dead, but if he was referring to a dead mag coil. then I agree. You must have a good mag coil ring for this to work. I had my magneto coil ring rebuilt by Wally of "Total Recoil". Jim Patrick

If the field coil is good and the recharge didn't work, try it again w/reversed polarity. You may have, for whatever reason, tried it the wrong polarity the first time, so a second try with the opposite polarity is worth a try.
The same goes if you're trying a recharge "out in the field" w/out a compass for guidance, You try it one way and if it doesn't work, you try it the other.
Don't forget to mark the crank pulley for reference.
I was taught this by another T fellow, who's been around and around and around.

When i battery start the car purrs but when switched to mag it lags. Does this mean that my mag coils are fuctional and i did not charge my magnets correctly. Or would the car still sputter with bad mag coils?
