Set the timing and it starts right up. Still running rough and I believe I have found the culprit. The plugs are fouling with too much gasoline. I am going to adjust the intake valves in the morning according to spec which is 004 on the intake and 006 on the exhaust. This should level it out. Had them set at 009.
Thanks for posting back.......
What did you find wrong with the timing?
I don't think .005-.003 is going to make any difference with the running.
Depending on which plugs you are using the insulators could already be gasoline soaked and not working correctly.
I'd start with the plugs and make SURE the points are making good contact.
Craig...the timing was almost right on. Have already checked the points and they have a strong spark. I learned a long time ago that you only adjust one thing at a time. Have cleaned the plugs and will try again in the morning with new clearances. Texas is too hot in the afternoons...
Thanks again for all your help...By the way...my best friend growing up was named Craig Anderson.
Charles - By chance, did you attend Jefferson HS in San Antonio?
LOL Charles.......you never know.......if I was in Texas déjà vu wouldn't be impossible.......
Glad things are working out!
No Ken did not attend Jefferson but when I was an asst principal in Alice we played Jeff in Alice, in a playoff game in the rain. The thing I remember most about that game was the Jeff band had to sing their songs as their instruments didn't arrive by truck until almost halftime. I want to say that was around 1982.
Stated it up this morning after adjusting the the valves. Number two and four plugs are fouling. it may be the oil going by the oil rings. Will check compression in 2 and 4. If that's the case and the rings are worn will pull it all down and go from there..
