Correct me if I'm wrong but from reading the old threads a magneto post should only have one wire coming from it and that wire goes to the junction box and then on to the mag connector on the switch. The switch then sends the voltage on to the coil box from either the mag or the bat depending on where you set the switch. This is about the 26 in my pic.
That is correct. Be sure that you connect it correctly, because if the battery should be accidentally connected to the magneto post, it will de-magnetize the magnets.
Well Norm then somebody screwed this 26 up because there are two wires coming from it and that is not right. The first time I had the floorboards off to grease the cups I didn't know enough to see the two wires as a problem. But after more reading I realize it is a problem. One wire is thin like the ones that go to the junction box but the other one is fat and I'm guessing that somebody sent that one to the coil box which I read will screw up the mag and it did screw up the mag because the car will idle on mag but won't run right on it. So in the morning I'll check it out to see where it goes because I'm away from the house till late tonight.
My thinking is if it idles on mag you don't have a mag problem.
While idling on mag take off a battery cable momentarily to see if it keeps running.
That will verify the switch isn't screwed up at least.......
The battery cable is ok it goes to the foot switch and then on to the starter, with the thin wire going to the bat junction box and on to the ammeter.
Ok Craig I'll check that out.
Well what do you know. That fat wire is actually a copper outside oil line to the front bearing. Is this where those outside oil lines usually originate from which is my mag post??
If an outside oil line is added, more often this is where it is installed.
Outstanding. Thank you Mark.
Do you have a picture you could post of the mag terminal and also a picture of where the other end of the "thick" wire goes? Some people have put a diode battery charger from the magneto to the battery. I have never seen one, so you could have that on your car. The diode will allow the electricity to go from the magneto toward the battery, but block the battery electricity from going toward the magneto forming a one way "gate". but you should never connect the magneto directly to the battery unless you have that diode.
Norm
My outside oil line is connected in the same way as what you are describing.
