Im getting around to the finishing touches on my '22 touring and am wondering what finish the steering wheel and spyder should have. I'm looking to be as period correct as possible. Currently the spyder is bare but pretty worn, as well as the wood wheel.

This is my first post here, but have been reading this forum for a while and am really looking forward to getting out in my T and meeting new friends!!

Hi Pat - Welcome to the Forum and the Model T hobby!

The steering wheel on your '22 Touring should be 16" OD, and the wheel is made of "Fordite". That's Ford's composite material. It's black and supposed to have kind of a satin sheen to it. I restored mine by washing it off real good, then using black shoe polish, buffed out, just like you would do with a pair of black shoes. Mine turned out very nice, even though it has a couple of deep scratches on it.

The spider is pressed (stamped) steel and should be painted black.

By the way, I checked your profile and see you are in Boston, NY. I tried to find it and it's not even shown in the atlas directory. Is Boston, NY so small that it isn't even listed? Just wondering...

Keith

The original would look something like the image below. Yours being wood could mean it's an accessory wheel or someone made it. Post a picture and we'll have a look.

It's an after market wheel.

Looks like an aluminum spider. Use fine steel wool and Simichrome Polish and polish the spider.

If the finish on the wood is bad, strip it and re-finish it (stain and varnish, etc.).

Pat - You can find a Fordite wheel from several sources: Use a "Parts Wanted" ad in the Classified section on this site, from other collectors in your area (it seems we all have extra parts collections), from the Vendors (Lang's isn't too far from you I think), or at a Swap Met like Hershey in October.

You should be aware that there are different sizes of Fordite wheels, so make sure you get the right one.

On the other hand, if you like the accessory wheel that you have, simply use it and skip the stock version. Whatever floats your boat.

Keith

Many people really like a few accessories on their Ts. Steering wheels like that are somewhat popular. It does not appear to be one of the more common ones, which is kind of nice. Most of the Ts I have had, I used after-market steering wheels on them.
Ford issue wheels are very nice also. The two Ts I am working on now are going to be stock issue.
Good looking T from what I can see of it. Welcome to the affliction!
Drive carefully, and enjoy, W2
