Hi all,

There are allot of things I am good at, somethings I'm not so good at...

Identifying aftermarket wire wheels is one of those things I'm rusty at but still learning.

I had a friend ask me if I could tell him about these wire wheels on an early Miller race car he has. They look like Buffalo, but I don't remember them making pin-drive knock-offs...more of a Houk thing, possibly Dayton.

Tire size is 4.50 x 19"

Any ideas?

I think they might be 19" Daytons. I have a set on my little sprint car.

From what I have seen in ads, Houk became House, which became Buffalo, all made in Buffalo. I have a magazine with a testimonial by Barney Oldfield, where he won the 1913 Lost Angeles to Phoenix race on the new Houks.

Wire wheels had a terrible reputation in the horseless carriage era, and by 1905 Olds was supplying artillery (wood) wheels. It took many years for the public to accept the newer wheels with deeper hubs that were strong enough for cornering.

I can't read the size of the tire in your pic.

Mine are #4 Houks with 30x3.5 clinchers. #5 Houks I've seen are split rim, and on bigger cars. I believe Bufaloes are #3 Houks.

Ralph,

Tire size is 4.50 x 19"

Does have any info on how the numbering works and #5, #3 and #4 mean?

The reason for the I.D. is that they are trying to locate a complete set of knock off caps for them..

These are Houk #4 hubnuts. They're wrench-off, not knockoff.

Mebbe somebody has better pix..
