If you are going to advertise and antique car, advertise it as many places as possible. The following are free:

MTFCA classifieds
MTFCI classifieds
HCCA classifieds
AACA buy/sell forum
AACA Model T forum
Craigslist

You can also include a link to photos with the MTFCA, MTFCI, HCCA ads if you set up a free photo hosting account such as Photobucket.

Whenever I sell a special interest car, I post it in the two largest, nearby cities, Eugene and Portland, Oregon on Craigslist.

It so happens though, every special-interest car I have sold, has been sold to someone in the Portland area, about 1-1/2 hours away.

One thing I like about CL that eBay's not real conducive to, is the fact that I can talk directly to and entertain offers from potential buyers.

Ebay allows you to post your email address and phone number on your ad, and reaches more people world wide. Craigslist is OK for garage sales but if you want to get the most money for your car Ebay is the best option.

I've sold several cars on eBay, it is the easiest and cheapest way I know of to get your car sold.

One thing however, you must know how to post pictures, and you need to be sure you have good pictures. I constantly see old cars being sold on eBay where the owner takes one or two photos in a dimly lit garage with their cell phone. That won't get good results.

You should post enough pictures to be able to not have to describe the car with more than a paragraph or two. Words should be factual, honest, and brief.

When I saw the title I was tempted to post the famous Chick Lambert video, but I'll be good.

Here's an example of a typical ad with all the basic mistakes I mentioned:

http://eugene.craigslist.org/cto/3224681429.html

Pictures taken in a dark garage, poorly framed, no engine shots, no interior shots, no shots of the underside. Price wildly out of touch with reality.

Says he has numerous awards, but no mention of the credibility of said trophys. Are they from the Amelia Island Concour D'Elegance, or are they from the Third Avenue Baptist Church picnic and softball game annual car show?

After checking out the above ad.......have someone proofread your ad so you don't come across as an idiot.......at LEAST get the title right.

What ever you do with eBay be sure to check out insertion fees, listing fees, as well as final selling fees....! eBay / tbay used to be a great place to sell a car I sold an Excalibur for $15,000 approx 10 years ago when it was all said and done total cost in eBay fees was just over $100 bucks. Now they get a huge chunk of your money when you sale. Be careful.....

The insertion fee for selling a vehicle is $60 on eBay. If your vehicle sells you pay an additional $125.

If you sell 6 or more vehicles in a calendar year eBay lowers the selling fee to $60 per vehicle sold.

A problem I often find with an item on Craig's List is trying to figure out where it is. Is Springfield in Massachusetts, Missouri, Illinois, Oregon, or one of the several other states with a Springfield? The only hint is a reference to Eugene. If you don't happen to know where Eugene is, you're lost.

Royce better check out PayPal fees .... If I'm not mistaken that is an eBay owned company as well, remember they have to rape you too. But I guess all that exposure comes at a price.
I had a Great offer on my mother-n-law roadster last Sunday I told the lady to bring me the cash!
If I thought I could get $5-6k more than her offer I would list it on eBay but I don't gamble, so better stick with the bird in hand.

While items or cars sold here, ebay, fordbarn etc can get you to the world, craigs list tends to be local. When placing an ad on craigs list people tend to think local area so the fact it could be Springfield Ill or Oregon doesn't even come to mind.

I've sold numerous vehicles on eBay and have always used Pay Pal to collect the deposit. For vehicle sales eBay does not require that you process the entire sale through Pay Pal - although of course you can if you wish, and it will cost the seller a percentage equivalent to typical credit card fees.

Both services are well worth the cost of doing business. I've sold hundreds of items on eBay using Pay Pal and likewise bought hundreds of other items with the proceeds. Never a single problem.

The vast majority of the market for any car unless it is truly a rare or exotic breed, is going to be local or semi-local, within 100 miles for most folks.

I see no reason to pay Greed-Bay for the service. I have sold every car I've sold in the past 7 years or so, on Craigs List and gotten exactly what I wanted (or more, as was the case in the 69 GTO I sold a couple years ago)

If it wasn't for ebay I wouldn't have my '19 touring which is the best looking one I have.
It came from lower central Michigan.
If I wouldn't have had a couple tractors coming this way I probably wouldn't have bought it but the stars were lined up between my hauler and the tractors so it fit into the hauling plan....... :-)

I'll bet you never tried this!
If you car is under $10,000, good value, drivable, and all there...Drive it to a large rural well known flea market. Put a fair price on the windshield and be ready to bargain a bit.
It worked for me.

David
That's how I got my offer its a long story but in a nut shell I met this lady on the I-127 yard sale.... So your right flea market or yard sales, it does work ....

I didn't see anyone mentioning Hemmings. The cost is reasonable to get world wide exposure. I've sold 4 cars on Hemmings and got to talk to each buyer before they decided to look or visit. One of my Model T's went to Europe and most times they will pay a fair price. You get exposure in print and on the internet for one price and you get to choose which size of ad you need. You can post it on line at www.hemmings.com or call them direct. No I don't work for Hemmings - they have just done a good job for me.

I've bought two cars and a project through Hemmings ads, two of them from the same guy twenty years apart, and a car and a project through Vintage Ford ads.

Hemmings didn't have much market penetration here. It was tough to compete against Auto-Trader for less than a buck I think.

You should consider eBay. I just sold my model t truck on eBay and it brought good money. Better than I thought.

The internet is the bane of print media.
It's there 24/7/365, is INSTANT, and really isn't that expensive.
If you were to place a print media ad with a bunch of photos you would probably have to wait a month to see it and you'd be lucky to get anything for a C note anyway.
It's a shame but that's life.

if you do Please disregard the question....

I don't know if it applies to selling, but because of demographics the internet certainly hasn't killed print media when it comes to shopping. A lot of the people selling antiques are computer averse (old). I just googled somebody I know who has sold Model T and Model A cars and parts for decades. He's about my age, I think. I see him at Chickasha and other swap meets in this part of the country. I didn't find any ads from him online, but he often advertises in Hemmings. This probably works the other way too. Online advertising is easy and fast, but if that's all you use you're skipping a lot of potential buyers who don't have a grandchild handy to help them find your ad.
