I pulled apart the engine from the '18 Touring. I do not have any mics, but with my caliper, I was able to tell it is still standard bore. The cylinder walls look great. I'm hoping I can get by with a hone job and new aluminum pistons. The main babbit looks good and has shims left. No discernable end play in the crankshaft. The lifters were only mildly concave. Nothing like the ones that had been in my truck engine. Those looked like they had been counterbored 60 or 80 thou. The reason for the rebuild was rod knock and no shims left. I can't believe an engine with so little wear otherwise, has used up all its rod shims. Gotta wonder if there ever were any in it? I'll be contacting Joe Bell here soon for some new rods. Guess I'll carry everything to the machine shop one day this week.

Replaced battery-to-starter switch cable with 2/0 cable, to match the cable from the starter switch to starter, done a week or two ago. Re-did battery connections.

Fired up on the new carburetor, (after sealed fuel tank, now steel fuel line with felt compression fittings at both ends ... ) for the first time, and did initial adjustments and took out for a spin. Top speed 37mph. Spark advance just didn't seem to do anything. When I got back, I found out why .. the commutator rod doesn't stay in the new Anderson timer. (see separate post). I have it safety wired now, but will need to get an appropriate control rod.

BUT ... she'll start on a 1/4 turn by hand now (at least when warm)! Whoo-hoo!

Bought more T parts today at an Auction here in SoCal. Got a 26-27 chassis with wire wheels that has been turned into a haycart?? and 3 AA wire wheels. I did OK I think. The AA wheels are headed to the SanFernando T/A swap meet tomorrow. The chassis will take some work to change it back to car use.

I cranked up the 22 Runabout and went down to see a new owner of a 27 Fordor. He lives about 2 miles from us. He had just bought it. Claims he bought it from the daughter of the original owner. The sheet metal looks very good. The engine is tight and the tires look good. The upholstery is good. I showed him how to check the oil and coolant. He had the battery on a charger, but it would not turn it but a half turn or so. So we tried to crank start it. Used starting fluid and got it to run for about 2 minutes. It seemed to be running rich and then smoothed out for about a second before stopping. We got it running several times and it runs on both battery and magneto, but there is an obstruction in the fuel system. I think it is starting out rich then when the fuel in the bowl drops to normal it smooths and then drops too low and it quits running. Wait about 5 minutes and repeat. Well anyway I told him about the thrust washers and said he needs to clean the NH carburetor and the fuel line as well as the sediment bowl. The car has been setting for ? years, so it is all gummed up. He got some gunk from the sediment bowl.

In his spare parts that came with the car he found a new set of spindle bolts, and bushings, two bronze thrust washers and two rear hyatt bearings. He also found a set of carb gaskets.

I am going down again next Saturday and he will be doing some fuel line cleanup during the week. Maybe we can get it running.

I told him that if he is planning to keep it and drive it, he should invest in a Ruckstell and Rocky Mountain brakes. This area is quite hilly, and I don't think he will like driving a Fordor without some auxillary parts.

Anyway it is interesting.
Norm

Depending on how fussy you are #0 welding cable will do too.

http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/wind-sun/TryStarWeldingCable.pdf

Any OEM tractor dealer should have something.
I've read of a lot of complaints about the grounding straps sold by the vendors. I'm not sure about the hot side cables.

William ... I went to my local auto parts store. They don't stock them that size, but they will make what ever length you want. My grounding cable is the same size, I think, but it is not the open, braided, 'strap' type. I don't know if it 'needs' to be, as this isn't a spot on rebuild. Electrically ... I would think 2/0 (two ought) should be 'good'.

As Craig mentioned ... welding cable will do, as well. I think welding cable (at least the good stuff) may have smaller strands making up the conductor, which makes it much more flexible than solid core or heavier stands. Honestly, I don't know which I got. The went out back, whopped it off, and put eye crimps on for me.

Drove my 21 Model T Speedster across town about 12 miles to a local car show. About 120 cars shown and I believe we had more people stop and ask questions about our Speedster than most of the other cars. All in all a really good day. (Also got a 1st place trophy)1921 Model T Dirt Track Speedster

Had a moderate wabble in the front end ....... turned down the king pins & took up the locking bolt & cotter. Did the same with the tie rod ends. Filled the oil cups. Also had to adjust the wheel bearings.

Went for a ride and behold, no more wabble.

Now .............. to rebuild the differential....

Did that about 5 years ago with period ball bearing thrusts. Now have grinding sounds.... going back to the bronze thrusts.

Also tried out the new software program on my E-Timer from Mike Kossor. More pep, more speed at given throttle position.

More to report later ..............

I jacked up the speedster to grease the wheel bearings and one of the front wheels immediately rotated half a turn, what horrible unbalance. I decided to fix it, never realized it would take over an hour!
First I removed the demountable rim and balanced the rimless wheel. I used about six weights and clipped them to the feloe. Then I replaced the rim with the tire and balanced again, holding the weights on with tape. Once it was about balanced, I removed the rim and installed the extra weights inside the feloe.
When I now spin the wheel it seems to stop in a fairly random position. Success....

Did you use something to indicate that, in fact, the seats seal all around?
Seats can look good but not BE good.

Steve run a ball hone in those cylinders. Lay the block on it's side with the crank end a bit high. Douse the hone with a soap and water blend. clean up each cylinder with the hone. Be sure the piston is at the bottom of its stroke. You will gain oil control and the rings will seat in nicely. The resulting hatch marks should be an X pattern. We do this on Outboards and small engines all the time. Use WD40 or similar spray oil to rinse and clean the bore after honing!

I just joined MTFCA and thought, as my first post, I would weigh in and describe what I did over the weekend. I rebuilt the floorboards on my T. The old ones, now 16 years old, were beginning to warp. That allowed the top board to slide down which resulted in limited pedal travel--not so good for brakes, reverse, and low gear.Side view of my T

Will: Yes, it's fine. What looks like scoring in the picture isn't. Run a finger over it and it feels smooth. In fact, all the cylinders feel like polished metal.

John: I'm not pulling the engine on this one anytime soon. A couple of other cars are ahead of it in that line. I'll get it running and try it out, and if it's OK I'll drive it until the others are done.

Gary: That is one swell chariot.

Went under the Special last night and looked at my new accessory 2 piece crankshaft that is on the market. Clayton and I will be pulling the engine in the next couple of days. Everything looks good internally o broken parts except the crank. We also drove Tin Tillie our 1919 touring for a fronds daughters wedding, actually Clayton did. I had to be at work at 2 am on the new job so I took my 2006 Whizzer to the wedding and for a little of the reception.

It has been months since I started this project I bought that was a mess. It had exploded and wiped out lots of parts that I remachined rather than buy new. After it was together and installed in the car I found that the Ruckstell side housing was bent,,REAL BAD ! I worked on that for a few hours and ended up heating it up at the tube to straighten it out so the outer bearing would go in. Tonight I put it in low gear and took it for a spin. 3.08 to 1 in a 26 coupe with 280 cam, light porting, dist, and a Z head works GREAT ! I went home and put it in high gear,"""I dont have the shifter Yet """" and went for another spin. I really like the gears now. :-) shifter install tomorrow and a good ride on Friday..

Thanks guys for the info on gear ratio a few weeks ago. I AM HAPPY

Installed new outer bearing sleeves, new brake cams, new shoes with linings (had to grind area at cam so hub bolts would not hit). Installed new seals in newer aluminum seal assembly. (Only 2.68 each instead of 45.00) Applied Red Timken to bearing before installing, inside and out.

Maybe tomorrow if it does not rain (predicted) I will finish paint on last rim and get wheels back on. Now its Pizza time.
