i have a 26 model t truck... which can fit a few clowns in the back (and front). but how many people would be too much, if say the average person weighs 150 pounds?
i've tried putting about five of such in the car at one time... and it is quite the load. certainly there is trouble driving uphill.
the only thing not working in the t is the generator.
Your profile says 26 roadster truck - I guess it's a roadster pick up with a standard passenger car rear axle or 3,636:1 gearing. A TT usually has 7.25:1 in the rear axle and should be able to pull all the clowns in Athens, GA, up any hill (at 15 mph recommended max speed)
With a passenger car rear end you have many options to increase pulling power up hill..
#1 Let another experienced Model T owner drive your car to be sure it's got most of its original 20 horses still in the stable
#2 if everything checks out OK like compression, ignition and carb, then a "Z" or Prus head will give you lots of oomph (and better mileage) for a few hundred $.
#3 If you don't know the history of your rear end, then you may want to split it to be sure it's got the replacement bronze thrust washers - original lead babbitt thrust washers tends to crumble and fall apart with age, risking your transmission brake. When inside the rear end you may as well change the pinion to a 10 tooth - with 4:1 you loose a little top end but gain 10% more hill climbing power in high.
#4 You may still want an intermediate gear between low and high - then a Ruckstell rear end or a Warford accessory trans may be a (more expensive) alternative.
thanks, roger. yes, it is a 26 truck with the standard pinion gear. thanks for your suggestions. indeed, an intermediate gear would be most useful. i will look into the "z" head.
i like your idea #1. but i don't know any model t owners here in athens, georgia.
Cal, I'll bet there are a lot more T owners around than you might think. In my little county of only 30,000 there are probably at least a dozen. Some of them even know something about their cars. In your county of over 100,000, I'd be surprised if there aren't at least a dozen T owners. As time goes by, you'll find some of them.
Well they will hold 32 kids:

thanks for your thoughts!
well, doing a bit more driving today, i noticed that the t was dragging even going down hill. this, loaded only with me. so i checked the brakes. burning hot. as it turns out the new disc brakes i put in need a check valve, which ought to have come included in the package. otherwise pressure builds up in the lines. this is true unless the master cylinder is installed 3 to 4 feet above the calipers.
having disengaged the disc brakes, the car now runs fine, up or down hills. i do look forward to having those hugely over-the-top brakes, however.
again, many thanks!
I dont think we will ever know how many clowns will fit into a Model T since as far as I can tell there are no Model T's in Washington DC.
Paul has it right, it's one of the universe's greatest mysteries.
Some dumb a$$ news reporter once asked Dolly Parton if she would consider running for congress. She said “No there are already enough big boobs in congress!”
